Would you pay $6.36 just for a Big Mac sandwich from McDonald’s? This is the question that the owners faced for the three McDonald’s businesses in Iceland. Now keep in mind this isn’t the Big Mac extra value meal. No fries or drink is included. This is just the McDonald’s Big Mac sandwich for $6.36. The economy in the United States has been tough, but the economy in Iceland has been even more tough.

Right now if you want to buy a Big Mac, it would cost you a whopping $5.29 in U.S. dollars. The import tariffs in the country have risen very high along with other costs, and it looks impossible to keep the McDonald’s in Iceland running. All three of the only McDonald’s restaurants in the country are going to close next weekend. This will be the last chance for Icelanders to enjoy a Big Mac sandwich in their country.

The rising costs would have forced McDonald’s to raise the price of the Big Mac to $6.36, which would have made it the worlds most expensive Big Mac. But instead of raising the prices again, they made the difficult decision to close all three of the restaurants. The stores will only be open for a few days longer.

In regards to the decision, Theresa Riley, a spokeswoman at McDonald’s headquarters in Oak Brook, Illinois, said in a statement “The unique operational complexity of doing business in Iceland combined with the very challenging economic climate in the country makes it financially prohibitive to continue the business”.

So this is it. After next weekend, it doesn’t look like there will ever be another Big Mac in Iceland ever again. The company doesn’t have any plans to want to return the McDonald’s restaurants to Iceland in the future. Certainly it could be possible if things change in the coming years.
