The Daiquiries

The Daiquiries

A closer view to the daiquiri cocktail family. Exploring the daiquiri evolution in the 111 years of it’s existance.

The Daiquiri es

Daiquiri is one of the oldest cocktails as it was invented by American workers in Cuba just before the beginning of the 20th century .This primal version of the daiquiri involved white rum lime juice and sugar all mixed up together .Later on it became a classic by keeping barkeepers busy through the bar and cocktail history with its standard around the globe recipe which is 4.5 cl White Rum , 2.0 cl Fresh lemon or lime juice and 0.5 cl Gomme syrup shacked well and strained into a chilled cocktail glass .Variations like daiquiri mulata (with the addition 0f 1cl of brown creme de cacao) appeared soon enough until inspired bartenders evolved the classic recipe by substituting lime with other fruits and blended them with ice . Today strawberry frozen daiquiri es are best sellers and peach , pineapple and melon frozen daiquiri es are just iirresistible.

One of the joys in a barman’s life is preparing this kind of stuff. Choosing the right fruit on it’s best season is essential just like having access to a powerful professional blender. As always when it comes to mixing cocktails you should use a pure , good quality rum of your choice . Light white rum will balance with some fruit flavors and become very easy to drink especially for the ladies while aged dark rum could bite a little bit with it’s distinct character. It’s all about your ways and that is why we hear more often people ordering a reserved daiquiri .But there is still more that goes around. Most recipes include a second spirit , a fruit liquor in order to strengthen the ‘nose’ of the cocktail and of course the glass has chanced and grown bigger while garnishing went far beyond the lime slice.

Let me pass you a list with the most common Fruit daiquiri es and their recipes trusted to me by few old barmen from downtown .

The strawberry frozen daiquiri. Nowadays we can find strawberries all year around but when on season is even better. Depending on how sweet they are we could add a teaspoon of sugar , preferably brown. So take of the leaves from 7-8 medium strawberries wash them and put them with the sugar in a blender .Pour 4.5cl rum and just 1 to 1.5 cl strawberry liquor , a full scoop ice and blend all together on high speed until perfectly smoothen ( Don t forget it cause it might melt).Serve it in a big margarita or one of your own choice glass with a straw .Easily can be garnished with a strawberry with sticked mint leaves on top.

The pineapple frozen daiquiri. Pick a mature sweet pineapple remove the bottom and top leaves with a knife and keep the best and younger ones for garnishing. Use a big knife to cut it in four pieces and remove the middle hard part. Now cut the 1/4 in pieces and put them in

the blender with rum and ice , blend until smooth and garnish with a maraschino cherry sticked on two pineapple leaves and together on a triangle pineapple slice.

The melon frozen Daiquiri. Same tactics , great fruit will give great result .Use just the flesh and add some midori melon liquor. Blend , serve and feel free to garnish with a big melon slice.

The banana frozen daiquiri. Fresh bananas and a quality banana liquor will make the difference.

The Peach frozen daiquiri. same way

The mango frozen daiquiri.

The ?????? frozen daiquiri.

Like fruit juices , specific daiquiri es mix with each other extremely well so you can try a mango-peach or a pineapple-strawberry daiquiri. Interesting enough…

Back to the beginning or to end with .. the daiquiri imperial which is a classic daiquiri with champagne .

coming soon … the margaritas.
