Whisky made in Scotland is referred to as Scotch whisky. In United Kingdom term Scotch is used for whisky.
Scotch whisky is further divided into four different categories like vatted malt, blended, single grain and single malt.
Vatted malt whisky is a blend of single malts and belongs to more than one distillery of different ages and so, even if this whisky is marked as 8 years old it may have contents older than 8 years.
Single grain whisky is further used to make blended Scotch whisky and out of 100% of the blended whisky, 60% of them are single grain.
Scotland has been a producer of whisky since hundreds of years and according the Whisky association in Scotland it is not exactly known since when this art was used.
Labels on Scotch whisky are a combination of marketing, tradition and low. If a label contains terms such as single malt then it is a single malt scotch whisky, if the term Scotch is missing then, probably it is a whisky made in other part of the world and not Scotland. Sometimes even the age of the whisky is mentioned on the bottle.

Whisky can only be called Scotch if it is made in Scotland and has been matured for more than three years.
ALso people from Scotland hardly ever use the term Scotch to describe their whisky, it is just whisky or malt.
