Wine, Beer and The Class System

Wine, Beer and The Class System

Did you ever realize how the consumption of beer and wine was used to divide the classes as far back in history as you can imagine? Workers and lower class people could not afford to drink wine but would only drink beer.

How old is the idea of “classes of people”? Even during ancient times there was a difference between the wealthy, royalty, priests, and workers. A person was born into, and still is a member of the class in which their parents are. Can a worker change and enter into the class level of royalty? Most likely not.

The idea of classes is an ancient idea and is still apparent today in all countries. Some countries tried a Socialistic idea giving rights that all people can live alike. Even with this idea, there is still a class difference between the powerful and elite versus the workers and ordinary people.

In the past even wine and beer consumption divided people into classes. Workers, or lower class, poverty stricken people, could not afford to drink wine. Therefore their choice of liquid was beer. Movies enlighten this idea by showing scenes of ordinary people drinking beer while being rowdy and self-consuming. These scenes usually involve fighting and bad behavior.

Now on the other hand when viewing a group of people drinking wine, the scene is intellectual and low key. The people are often getting along well and involved in conversation that makes you think. Wine has been and still is considered a social drink. How and why is there a class division with the consumption of wine?

In Egypt, wine was important in the ancient ceremonial life. Winemaking scenes can be found on tomb walls with the offering list accompanying them. The celebration of death included wine and the dead were given wine to go with them in death.

So if we were to strike out against “divided classes,” by changing the ideas of division between wine drinkers and beer drinkers would be a good place to begin.
