World’s Most Expensive Coffee

World’s Most Expensive Coffee

Kopi Luwak.

Start of August, I did a course called “Art of Coffee Making” at the International Institute of Coffee & Barista Training. There was something I wanted to share and it crossed over my mind. I guess you’ll be wondering what it is I have to say? Well, I wanted to talk about the World’s most expensive coffee.

Let’s say, being a coffee fanatic, this was not a new information for me. I ask you this, do you know what the world’s most expensive coffee is? No, I’m not talking about the world’s most expensive cup of coffee (the word – cup – would change the question all together).

The answer is Kopi Luwak.

“Kopi Luwak?”, you ask with a thought that I might be giving you a bit of a garbled language for humour. No, it’s true, the name is actually “Kopi Luwak”.

Now, let’s see why its so expensive :

Kopi Luwak  made from coffee berries which have been eaten by and passed through the digestive tract of the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxurus hermaphroditus) and other related civet populations.(yes it has been this way from the start). The civets eat the berries, but the beans inside pass through their system undigested.

Here’s a picture of the farmer holding the feces before processing. (I can hear you say YUCK!)

And here’s the civet that makes it all happen! Way to go digestive system !

Ok, now we know what it is, let’s see how expensive it is : It’ll cost you an average $100 to $600 (prices in USD) per pound of coffee.

There’s a mention of Kopi Luwak in the movie “The Bucket List”. This is a fabulous movie film directed by Rob Reiner, written by Justin Zackham, and starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman.

I guess you now know what the World’s most expensive Coffee is. I shall see you guys in the next article, I’m off to grab a cup of coffee in the mean time. Care to join?

Cheers,
Kaavs

I’m sure that I’ve read somewhere that Stephen Fry has given this to Prince Charles as a gift…..?

Kopi Luwak is so expensive because it is such a labor-intensive process of finding (gross), cleaning (grosser), processing and exporting to countries and buyers willing to pay the asking price for this coffee.
