At breakfast I read my horoscope in my daily newspaper, a bit of fun and I don’t take it seriously. Young people enjoy reading horoscopes as they are still waiting for the stars to guide them on to romance, fame and fortune but for the more mature, admitting to reading what your stars hold for you, is akin to admitting to being completely gullible. I tend to go through the paper in an orderly fashion. First, a glance at the headlines and read on if they are of interest. Then I flick over to the back page to catch up with the sport and finally the horoscope page and my stars. With a readership of 500,000, a considerable amount of people will have the same sign as mine. Let us say ten percent is a reasonable assumption, then up to 50,000 people are possibly in for the same prediction. Logically it is impossible the same prediction could be true for all. Surely we cannot all fall in love with a new acquaintance and have money coming to us? What if just for this one day the predicted luck is mine? A holiday, a romance, a windfall, sounds fine –although I am not sure what my wife would make of the romance bit. “The opposite sex finds you attractive.” Tell me something I don’t know. “Your mother in law will finally forgive you for marrying her daughter and will give you the holiday she will win at bingo.” Wow. “On Saturday a large amount of money comes your way.” Saturday is lotto day. “You’re lucky colour is red. You’re lucky number is two.” A quick look back on the racing page and there it is. ‘Red Ace, 2pm at Redcar its odds are 50/1. I don’t usually bet but a hint like that has got to be worth a fiver. Of course it’s only a precaution. I don’t really believe it will happen as the horoscope says but no point completely ignoring it. Leaving the house this morning, I put an old jacket on that I hadn’t worn for months and found a fiver in the inside pocket. Where did I put my Lotto slip? I have got to make sure number two is on every line!
