RC Airplanes: A Learning in Progress, Part 1

RC Airplanes: A Learning in Progress, Part 1

A journey through the understanding of Radio Controlled Aiplanes.

If you’re like me you don’t have a clue what RC airplanes are all about. I think this is due to being the age I am and living so far away from my grandsons. But we have had the privilege of our youngest grandson come to stay with us over the summer and he is very passionate about all kinds of aircraft. He is hoping to be a pilot one day so I figured I’d better get myself informed so I could share some of the enthusiasm of what is near and dear to his heart or at least know what he’s talking about so I can join in on the conversation.

RC airplanes are those that are remote controlled with the help of radio signals. He holds a hand held transmitter that has a joy stick attached somewhat like that of a video game. The receptors on the plane catch these signals and operate according to where he wants it to go. There is a servomechanism that is the receptor that is on the plane which is an automatic device that lets him control the plane. Below is Jordan starting to fly one of his planes.

Radio Controlled airplanes is a hobby, for most even though it can prove to be an expensive hobby. It has only become a major hobby the past few years but has been in existence since the late 19th century. Back in the early days of Radio controlled planes it was hydrogen filled airships that were electronically guided. Some of these planes were flown as a music hall act around a theater auditorium using basic spark-emitted radio signals. The Royal Aircraft Establishment of Britain built and tested an aircraft called the Larynx which was a monoplane with the range of one hundred miles. This was the start of what was to come. Below is a picture of our grandson attending a Snow Bird show that was held in Fort McMurray last summer. Of course, Jordan was in awe of the pilots. Chad , his brother, not so much but tagged along with Jordan for company.

When we visited our daughter last summer I grumbled due to the kitchen table always being loaded down with what I considered junk. It may have been junk to me but not to our grandson. He built his planes from scratch and this was the junk I was referring to which brought a scornful look from my grandson at the time. You know us grandparents, always saying things that the younger generation doesn’t understand or vice versa. I didn’t know then, but I do now, that building the plane is all a part of the flying experience. I found out from my grandson that there are ready to assemble kits and planes that are ready to fly but he figured it wasn’t as good as doing it yourself.

I have lots more to learn about Jordan’s hobby but I’m determined to be able to carry on a conversation with him about his favorite subject. He joined Air Cadets to help bring him closer to his dream and maybe one day that dream will come true. If it does I’m sure I’ll be one proud grandma just as I have been since the day he was born.

This might be an expensive hobby, but how great your grandson chose that instead of spending his time and money elsewhere on something less acceptable. You are a great grand mother to learn about things so you can be a part of the enthusiasm. Thank you too for this educational post so we too know something now.

Jordan is lucky he has such a great hobby he likes! Aviation people seem so passionate about flying, great to be passionate about something like that in life.

At first I didn’t have a clue as to what this article was going to be about! Ha ha. I think your grandson is into a fascinating hobby but what is Air Cadets? My husband likes RC helicopters…and so do the cats which is why he doesn’t have one! :)

MJ, Air Cadets is a group, something like boy scouts only they devote their time to airplanes. Kids can stay in Air Cadets until they reach a certain age and if they are serious about flying it helps promote them futher. Jordan spent a week in Edmonton Alberta with the Air Cadets where they visited a control tower, was taken up in an airplane for an hour( where he learned quite a bit about flying) and visited all the airports. Air Cadets not only does fun things but have rules that are something like the Air Force so it also molds their character.

thanks for the comments everyone although I have no idea what # 9 is all about lol.
