Abbot Kinney festival

Today in Venice Blvd Venice, California, a special festival is being held to recognize the famous American Abbot Kinney, who was recognized for his Venice of America development and for his role as a developer and conservationist.

The festival will run from 10:00 A.M to 6:00 P.M today (9/27). Cost of admission is free to everyone, and will include numerous performances, exhibits, and delicious food. Some of the many performances being held today are as follows:

Echo park time bank square dance/social

“Time Banking is built on the idea that each of us has unique gifts, talents and resources to share, and that everyone’s time is equal.”, is the principle of the Time Banking exchange system. Stop on by and dance your heart out at the Square dance and social (5-9 P.M) or listen to musical performances starring Triple Chicken Foot and home-brew by the East-side Brewers L.A. You can also donate to the dance for 10$ or enjoy the evening dancing with a loved one for 15$ (2 people per).

Book Panel Discussion

Book lovers everywhere should certainly attend this discussion, which is hosted by Kaya Oakes, Ben Rush, Courtney Knopf, and Daniel House. Music will be provided by The Old Lumps as the event starts. (free, 5-6 P.M)

African American Film Pioneers at The Hammer

Travel back in time as writer/directors Oscar Micheaux and Spencer Williams get their early American films viewed at the The Hammer/UCLA film archive in the Billy Wilder Theater at 7 P.M. Witness the story of black social and dynamic struggles, cultural views, and the hardships and complexities of African Americans during that period. Written in a distinctly black point of view, this film archive will touch your heart and soul as you witness the true culture and social struggles of the African American people.
