Be a Closed Person

Anyone planning to go hiking or climbing should ensure that they are properly fitted with the correct footwear.

Open sandals are definitely not a good idea for hiking or climbing, as they do not provide enough support, and could lead to injuries to the feet and ankles, such as twists and sprains, and leave the area vulnerable to damage from heavy objects, for example, falling rocks and stones. Open sandals are fine for a short walk or stroll over even ground, but they would probably be uncomfortable for a longer distance. Closed shoes, preferably ones that are laced up, are much better, and will provide a lot more support for the foot and ankle – this is especially important when walking and climbing over uneven ground and up hills and mountains.

The most appropriate footwear for hiking and climbing is a pair of good quality hiking boots. These will provide support around the ankle, thus helping to prevent any injuries occurring, and they should have a supportive instep. There should be a good tread pattern on the sole, to ensure a decent grip on the ground. It is also a good idea to have different boots for summer and winter if you are a serious hiker or climber, as the winter ones need to have a stiffer sole to enable crampons to be attached to them. The material is also important – modern materials such as Goretex are breathable and also waterproof, both of which are very important to those who enjoy outdoor pursuits.

When buying footwear for hiking and climbing, it is important to go to a specialist shop such as Millets or Blacks, as they will have a wide range of good quality Merrell boots, and will be able to advice on the most suitable ones within a set budget.
