Building Permit Required by Tweed to Put Up Tent in Campground

Building Permit Required by Tweed to Put Up Tent in Campground

I was putting up a garage tent to store my winter wood in when the building inspector drove through the Park. This is a temporary tent, 10 feet by 20 feet, the perfect size to store four bush cords of wood. Tweed. has been discriminating against Trudeau Park for 17 years I’ve been here because of the May 2-4 longweekend festivities.

I was putting up my garage tent when the building inspector happened to drive by on a fishing expodition. I was told I needed a building permit to put up the tent. This tent is not a permanent structure!! It’s to keep the snow and ice off my wood. He said the tent was too big. If a tent is bigger than 10 feet by 10 feet you need a building permit. He also said no permits would be issued for the Park.

How many families go camping and the tents they use have a separate bedroom? How many family sized tents are bigger than 10 x 10? If you have to apply for a building permit and pay for the permit would you still go camping?

I think it’s beyond rediculous that you need a building permit to put up a tent in a campground. Tweed spends tax dollars to attract tourists and bills itself as a tourist and retirement village. Why spend money to attract tourists if you’re going to discriminate against those who camp in a tent?

Tweed has been at odds with Trudeau Park for years over the May 2-4 long weekend festivities. It’s one weekend a year of loud music and playing in the mud. Between 1,500 and 2,500 people show up for the weekend. We have no say or control as to the number of police officers get sent to the park for that weekend. Tweed wants $30,000.00 to $40,000.00 upfront to cover the costs of policing. Tweed has also said they don’t want all of the “outside” garbage going to the local landfill site. Trudeau Park pays the tipping fees for all garbage taken to the dump. They want this paid for upfront as well.

If a visitor to Tweed is involved in a car accident and the police are involved is Tweed going to charge the tourist the full cost of the police investigating the accident? Are they going to set up a toll booth and charge non-residents a garbage fee to enter the municipality?

The May long weekend brings a lot of tourist dollars into the area. The majority of businesses have increased sales, not just the Beer and Liqour stores. The current Tweed Council and the Building Inspector are a joke. You can’t put up a tent in a campground without a building permit. I can’t wait for the next election.

No nice, neat looking tent. What I can put up is as many 10 foot by 10 foot sheds, build out of scrap lumber from the dump, as long as they are all 10 feet apart. I refuse to pay for a building permit to put up a tent in a camp ground. I will protest by building as many ugly sheds on my lot as possible. And they will be ugly!! Please post pictures of ugly sheds in the comment section for inspiration.
