Campfire Cooking

A newcomers guide to cooking on campfires.

Everyone has cooked on a campfire some time in their life, but did you know not all fires cook the same? Here are four common fires and some information about them.

  1. The Tepee: By far the hottest fire. This form produces high levels of heat which are needed to cook food evenly. Be sure to have lots of small pieces of wood to restock the fire and keep the heat up.
  2. The Log Cabin: This fire produces a hot bed of coals. Wrap the food in foil and use the cabin like a Dutch oven. The heat that is created is very even; this will result in a nice hot bed of quick coals.
  3. The Keyhole: To construct this fire arrange rocks into the shape of a key hole. In the round part build a tepee and in the square portion make a log cabin. This fire is great for multitasking because the log cabin can be used for cooking while the tepee provides light and hot cooking coals.
  4. The Pinwheel: This is the fire you see everyday. The logs are arranged in a starburst fashion which creates a low center of heat. This type of fire is great for cooking up some crispy fish.
