Early Spring Hiking

Early Spring Hiking

Benefits and dangers of hiking in the late winter or early spring.

Most of us in North America have been stuck indoors for the past couple months just waiting for the weather to warm up for our outdoor adventures.

Eager to get off the couch and re-engage in hiking, fishing, camping, mountain climbing, often gets us out a little prematurely.  Sometimes that spells disaster, and sometimes that spells pristine natural habitats in their most beautiful form.

Caution should be taken to ensure safety and a safe return.  Yes, most of us are quite experienced hikers and have never had a problem.  Hopefully that streak continues for you and your team of hikers.  There is however those that get into trouble every year about this time and at many different levels of experience.

Remember the last time you hiked?  It was probably before Thanksgiving.  That means your body has been sitting around getting un-acclimated to your sport. So despite the extra pounds you may have added since the holiday grazing, your muscles are out of shape.

Now lets add mother nature’s piece.  It’s colder. wetter and less stable that it was the last time you hiked.  Planning a trip the same distance where you last hiked, is not realistic or safe.  Work your way back up to your previous abilities.

Take your standard safety items with you.  A flashlight, compass, map of the area, blanket, poncho, waterproof matches, food, and a knife.

Enjoy nature at its freshest state.  Wear your thick socks and warmer clothing than normal.  Layers are best.  Be sure to fill out a trip itinerary with the local ranger station and your friends or neighbors.  Make sure people know when to expect you back and at what point you are overdue.

Safe hiking!
