Kite festivals are a popular form of entertainment throughout the world. Kite flying is very popular in the People’s Republic of China, Korea, Japan, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, and many other Asian countries. It is extremely exciting to watch one’s kite soaring high in the sky. Here are some steps to make a simple homemade kite.

Before making a kite, decide on the shape or form of the kite. Kites come in various shapes and forms but the basic forms are flat or bowed, box or cellular, semi-rigid or non-rigid.

Get two thin, long bamboo sticks. One must be longer than the other. Then, use a string to tie two sticks together. Next, tie a string to each end of the stick to make a frame. Make sure the flame is strong yet lightweight. Place the flame on the piece of paper that you want to make your kite with. After that, copy its shape with a pencil. Then, cut the piece of paper so that it is bigger than the frame. Apply some glue to the edges of the paper.

Next, fold the edges over the string frame. Make a “tail” by attaching colorful strips of paper to the bottom of a kite. Decide if you want to bow your kite. Bowing can be a smooth curve or an angle at the center of the kite. Also decide if you want to vent your kite. Venting, openings in the covering materials of the kite, allows air to go through the kite and add stability to it. Then, tie a string from the middle of the kite to its “tail”. Finally, tie the end of a roll of string to it.

Now, your kite is ready. You can lift your creatively designed kite up in the sky for pleasure.

When flying the kite:

When you are going to launch your kite, make sure you are in an area that is open and free from trees, electrical and telephone lines and buildings. Stand with your back to the wind. Hold the kite with one hand and the reel of string with the other.

Let the wind lift the kite as it does, feed out to the line to the height you wish. Walk in the direction of the wind as you feed out the line. To land the kite, walk towards it, winding the line on the reel as you walk.
