How to Make Campfire Coffee
It takes a little practice to use a minimalist camp kitchen. Two enamelware mugs and a twig stove are all you need for a backpacking trip.

Poke holes near the bottom of two empty family-size soup cans, all the way around. Turn them upside down and place in your fire ring. Crumple any available paper and lay small twigs in a criss-cross. Light your fire and add more tinder, working from twigs to finger-width wood.

Once your fire is going, place a grill over it, balancing on the cans and the rocks of your fire ring.

Add two tablespoons of coffee grounds and an equal amount of sugar to two 16-ounce enamelware mugs. Fill each mug 2/3 to 3/4 full with water. Stir vigorously.

Place mugs on the grill, in the heart of the fire, with handles turned toward your fire ring.

Once your coffee begins to boil and you can see the grounds rolling, move your mugs to the edge of the fire using a pair of metal tongs or a spoon as shown. This allows your handles to cool. Stir your coffee to ensure that the grounds have mixed with the water. Allow your coffee grounds to settle for several minutes.

Remove your mugs from the fire and allow to cool until you can pick them up in comfort. Sip coffee slowly to avoid having the grounds unsettle. Rinse mug and store upside down on your uprights for your spit.
