The Thrill of Exploring and Learning About Opportunities In Nature and Geology
Spelunking or caving offers you the thrill of exploring the hidden realms while providing fun learning opportunities about nature and geology. Here’s what you need to know before starting your spelunking adventure.

- Learn about caving basics – Surf on-line or read books to learn more about the different types of caves and its geology, equipment needed, caving hazards, do’s and don’ts and caving opportunities.
- Get fit – Caving is a physically demanding activity, so start pumping up with aerobics and weights at least two weeks before your outing.
- Skills to master – Besides getting fit, it’s important for you to know some vital skills such as rope knotting and first aid skills. Since caves are unfamiliar terrain for first-time explorers, knowing these skills is indispensable to prevent unwanted accidents in the cave and to treat minor injuries.
- Take part in cave tours – By actively taking part in cave tours, you’ll get to see firsthand how pro cavers do it. Join some society that has special interest groups for caving and it also offers courses such as basic caving, cave explorations and conservation
- Leave a note – Remember to make a list of who’s going, jot down the name of the cave and its exact location, estimated hours for caving, expected date and time of return and emergency contact to pass to your family and friends.

Interesting article. I’ve always had a fascination with caves and even went inside one, which I enjoyed. I wrote a poem one time about spelunking using some challenge words I found online, but I’ve never posted it here because I’m not sure if it’s all that great.

There are a few caverns around here and you’re right exploring them is physically challenging and a lot of fun.
Good advice.
