Love him or hate him just about anyone who watches TV knows Billy Mays. That loud shouting voice forcing you to buy Orange Glo or Oxi Clean. Although he is sometimes quite rude you have to admire him for his dedication. He defintely knows how to get in your face and sell you that product.

The story begins in 1958 when William Mayes was born in McKees Rocks, Pensylvania. Soon after graduating he started his salesman career by selling products on the Atlantic City boardwalk. His first product was the Washmatik. He learned a lot of things by watching other more experienced pitchmen.

For the next 12 years of his career he traveled around peddling various products. He traveled to home shows, auto shows, and county fairs. Things he sold include matienence products, tools, cleaning products, and food choppers.

In 1993 he finally got his big break. Max Appel a rival salesmen whom he knew started Orange Glo International. He was soon hired to promote Oxi Clean Orange Glo, and Orange Clean. His first infomercial was on the Home Shopping Network.

His appearence on TV was a great success for the Orange Glo company. Sales sharply rose after Mays addition to the company. Some people hated his selling style, but the results speak for themselves.

His style consists of yelling loudly, and getting the customers attention. He talks fast, and really gets into the infomercials. Mays has started his own advertising company, and many companies have used him for their commericals. He moved on to light switches, slicers, putties, and other stuff we never though we would really need.

With May’s success he is here to stay. He just celebrated his 50th birthday, and is still going strong. He recently scored a reality show on Discovery Channel “Pitchmen”. So next time you see him on a commercial late at night, remember that your watching a legend at work. Wait for the final pitch line ‘but wait if you call now we will double your order.’
