Andrew Jackson and Indian Removal: Autocrat or Democrat? Pt. Three
This essay discusses the deeply autocratic qualities of Andrew Jackson, dealing with the specific events of the Bank War, the nullification crisis, and Indian removal. This last installment discusses his actions concerning Indian removal, one of the darkest moments in American history, and concludes this topic.
In addition to Jackson’s autocratic actions regarding the Bank war and the nullification crisis, Jackson’s participation in the removal of Indians can be seen as autocratic leadership because he overrode the system of checks and balances to get what he believed was right. Andrew Jackson became famous for waging wars against the Creeks and Seminoles. He won the presidency in 1828 on the promise of freeing land for white settlers. Jackson promoted the idea of moving the Indians west of the Mississippi to make room for the white settlers (“Blankets for the Dead” 11). During his presidency, Congress passed the Indian Removal Act in 1830 in which $500,000 was allocated for Indian removal. According to Black Hawk’s surrender speech in 1832, “Few tribes went willingly” (57). Black Hawk and his son were even “captured and sent by Andrew Jackson on a tour, to be displayed as ‘trophies’ of war. … Governmental policy continued to treat the tribes as barriers to progress, either to be removed to some distant reservation or killed” (“Surrender Speech” 58). By promoting the passage of the Indian Removal Act, Jackson functioned as an autocratic leader by not considering the rights of the Indians to remain in their homes. In addition, the fact that most Indian tribes did not want to leave their homes demonstrates that Jackson did not act in the best interests of the Indians; in other words, he acted in his own best interests, showing that he was an autocratic leader by imposing his authority and his will on the Indians. Furthermore, Jackson’s display of Black Hawk and his son as trophies of war illustrates Jackson’s autocratic leadership style by him treating them as trophies instead of human beings deserving freedom. The Seminoles in Florida even fought off the U.S. Army for seven years before giving up their land (“Blankets for the Dead” 12). Using military force for seven years to remove the Seminoles from their homes, Jackson displayed autocratic leadership by not acting in the best interests of the Seminoles and by not allowing them the right to remain in their homes. The Cherokees, knowing that they may be the next tribe to be removed, appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court and won the right to remain independent and self-governing (“Blankets for the Dead” 13). Unfortunately, President Jackson ignored the Court’s ruling. The article “Blankets for the Dead” states:
This right [to remain self-governing] existed only on paper. Federal agents, armed with ready cash, found a small group of Cherokees willing to sign a removal treaty. In December 1835, the Treaty of New Echota turned over to the U.S. government all that was left of the Cherokee lands in exchange for $5 million and a parcel of western prairie. (14)
By ignoring the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that allowed the Cherokees to remain self-governing in
Georgia, President Jackson acted autocratically with no regard for America’s system of checks and
balances. Overall, according to Meacham, “his [Jackson’s] dealings with the Indian tribes that finally
led to the Trails of Tears were shameful “(18). The “Trail of Tears” was an 800-mile journey that the
Cherokees took from the Southeast to Oklahoma. Their very difficult journey is described below:
The difficult 800-mile journey by river and over land began immediately after they were taken captive. … [There was] sickness … drowning [was] commonplace. … Many Cherokees died before the journey had really begun. … Cold weather brought new epidemics … The travelers marked every stopping place with new graves … where the ground was frozen … they covered the bodies of the dead with blankets. (“Blankets for the Dead” 22-23)
According to the “Blankets for the Dead,” there were … many such trails [“Trails of Tears”], as the Creeks, Choctaws, Chickasaws, Seminoles and other tribes were forced to abandon their homelands “ (2). By forcing these Indian tribes to leave their homes and endure harsh living conditions, Jackson was not acting in the best interests of the Indians; therefore, he was acting autocratically, favoring his land expansion policies over giving the Indian tribes the right to remain living in their homelands.
While Jackson was portrayed as the People’s president, President Jackson can be viewed more as an autocratic leader than a democratic leader. During the Bank war, he functioned more as an autocratic president by ignoring the ruling of the U.S. Supreme Court and the easy passage of the re-charter bill by Congress as well as by not recognizing that the Bank war was not a significant issue for the common man. In addition, based on his actions regarding the nullification crisis in South Carolina, Jackson was an autocratic leader by being willing to utilize any military force to collect tariffs in South Carolina. Furthermore, President Jackson was truly an autocratic leader concerning his Indian Removal policy, especially by ignoring the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling that the Cherokees had the right to be self-governing in Georgia. While Jackson ran for president to represent the common man, he certainly did not represent the common man by ignoring America’s system of checks and balances. Some may mistake Jackson’s majoritarianism with democracy, as he did what most wanted. Instead, he should be considered an autocrat because he chose to expand the powers of the presidency by vetoing the re-charter bill, ignoring the U.S. Supreme Court’s rulings regarding the Bank war and Indian removal in Georgia, and being willing to use military forces for the nullification crisis and Indian removal.
