A brief biography on th 1996-2007 Australian Prime Minister, John Howard.
John Winston Howard was born on the 26th of July, 1939. He was the 25th Prime Minister of Australia from the 11th of March, 1996 to the 3rd of December, 2007. Howard was the second longest serving Prime Minister, after Sir Robert Menzies.
John Howard was a member of the Australian House of Representatives from 1974 to 2007. He represented the division of Bennelong, in New South Wales. He served as the Treasurer in the government of Malcolm Fraser from 1977 to 1983.
Howard was the Leader of the Opposition in 1995, and led the Liberal-National Coalition to victory in the 1996 election. The party was re-elected in the 1998, 2001 and 2004 elections, before being succeeded by Kevin Rudd and his party in 2007. He also lost his seat to Maxine McKew by a few hundred votes, becoming the second Prime Minister to lose his own seat.
John Howard was the fourth son of Lyall Howard and Mona, who were married in 1925. He grew up in the Sydney suburb of Earlwood. He joined the Liberal Party in 1957. At the 1974 election, Howard successfully contested the seat of Bennelong in Sydney, and became a Member of Parliament in the House of Representatives. He was appointed Treasurer in December that year and had the position from 1977-1983.
In 1996, John Howard had a 45-seat majority form his victory. This gave him great power within the Liberal Party. HE also stayed at Kirribilli House, the Sydney Prime Minister residence, instead of The Lodge, Canberra. Howard was successful in many years to come, before being defeated in the 2007 election against the Australian Labor Party, lead by Kevin Rudd.
