Charles Darwin

Charles Darwin

Charles Robert Darwin was born in February 1809 at Shrewsbury, England.

He was the 5th of 6 children of the wealthy society doctor and financier, Robert and Susannah. He died on the 19th of April 1882 due to a heart attack. During his childhood he attended the Anglican Shrewsbury school with his brother has a border. During his schooling years his father encouraged him in the area of science and was later inspired in the area of evolution and atoll formation. Other scientists such as Lamarck also inspired him. He then graduated at Christ’s college Cambridge with an art degree in 1831.

During his journey on the beagle, he discovered the rarely seen Megatherium fossil which is similar looking to the modern armadillos. At the newly discovered Galapagos Islands, he found mocking birds and turtle shells of different varieties differing from each island. By investigating these places he came to the conclusion as there’s more individuals than possibly survive, there is a struggle for survival. The one with better chance of surviving will be naturally selected to lead the next generation.

During his investigation about atoll formation, during an earth quake in Chile, he theorized as land rose, oceanic islands sunk and coral reefs surrounding them form atolls. His trip to the Coco’s island atolls supported his theory. During his many expeditions, he also wrote many books and his most well known one is called the origin of species.

Later on he theorized that humans were originated from apes as there was many similarities. This theory caused many people into deep confusion. It basically divided everyone into two groups. The first group was the people who supported the creation theory due to their religion. The second supported Darwin’s evolution theories.

The greatest contribution from Darwin was his many books and the theory of evolution and atoll formation. Without him, we may never have a better understanding of evolution and how atolls were formed.

Oh by the way, here’s a cartoon depicting Darwin a few million years ago if he was alive!!!
