The life of Fred Hollows.

Fred Hollows was born in 1929 in New Zealand. He became a doctor and specialized in eye surgery. He started working in Sydney in 1960, after five years he became head of the eye department.

Fred helped Australian aboriginals get there eye sight back. He organized the first Aboriginal Medical service. He got many doctors to help him with the program. The team treated over 30,000 people, they prefomed over a thousand operations and prescribed more than 10,000 pairs of glasses.

Over the 80’s and 90’s Fred travelled to all of the developing countries to help set up eye health programs. In Nepal, Eritrea and Vietnam, he organized lens laboratories.

In Fred’s lifetime he gave thousands of people all over the world there eye sight back. Fred believed in equality for all people .He had a passion to get people to help themselves e.g. build their own eye lens factories.

Fred was very successful in everything he has done .He has helped over one million people see today, thanks to the $6,000,000 donated by Australians to help support his dream. Aboriginal medical services have also been developed. After his death the Fred Hollows foundation was set up to keep his dreams going.

Jesus would perform miracles on people, he healed the sick and fed the poor.  Fred also helped the sick by improving their eye sight and helped the poor by building lens factories.

Fred wanted to help  people in need he received nothing in return .As young people today we can follow his example by going for our own goals and wanting to  achieve them. We can volunteer our time to help the poor and homeless by working in soup kitchens and donating goods.

Fred Hollows died in 1993 of cancer. Gabi Hollows is continuing Fred’s work. He was a great man l hope to be able to do half as much as he has.
