Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman

All about the woman known as Moses.

Harriet Tubman was called Moses. She was born circa 1820. Tubman became famous leader of the Underground Railroad to aid slaves from Canada. She was born into slavery in buck town. She escaped out of slavery in 1849 to find safe heaven in Philadelphia. She would spend her life helping others escape from slavery. Harriet had been filled with abuse at age 13, struck after escaping work as a maid. Her first expedition took place in a military campaign that resulted in the rescue of 756 slaves and destroyed millions of enemy property.

Southern to put a stop to her activities rewards for a captors once to a total of about 40,000 dollars. Harriet Tubman took more than 18 trips and freed more than 300 slaves including her parents. Harriet Tubman was raised under hard conditions. In 1844 (age 25) she married John Tubman. In Philadelphia Tubman got a job where she saved her pay to go free slaves. With the assistance of Still and other members she learned about the Underground Railroad. In 1850 she helped her first slaves escape from the North. In September 1850 Harriet was made an official conductor of UGRR.

This meant she knew all the routes to free territory so the secret of the Underground Railroad would be kept a secret. Harriet’s 3 trip was in 1851 in Canada. She went to go get her housebound John. She gave a baby a sedative so she would notary and would take the passenger to Pennsylvania. The trip was long and couldn’t reach Frederick Douglas’s safe house. In winter 1852, Tubman was ready to return to the U.S to free more slaves. The plantation owners knew her for her efforts. In 1869 she got married to another person named Nelson Davis. She died on March 10, 1913. The Federal governments with a commemorative postage stamp honored her. That’s the end of my report on Harriet Tubman.
