SALIM ALI

He was one of the greatest ornithologists and he was also called as the grand old man. He was born on 12 November, 1896 and he was hard of hearing too. He kept interrupting people by saying “pardon”.  Salim Moizuddin Abdul Ali’s involvement with birds was so much that his ears, eyes were always open to the call of birds, their song and to their presence in thickets, bushes and on tree tops, even when he was not engaged in ornithological activities.

When he was small, he used to hunt birds with his uncle Ammirudin and sometimes alone also. Everything was fine till he shot a sparrow with a yellow throat. He thought that a normal sparrow would be good for a meal but will this yellow throated sparrow would also make a fine meal. He took the sparrow to his uncle, his uncle, also the member BNHS-’Bombay natural history society’ had a doubt. So, he took the boy with the sparrow to the secretary of the society, Walter Samuel Millard. From there onwards the interest of the boy in birds increased and he came close to ornithology. Slowly, he got many opportunities and at the end of his journey he came to be known as one of the greatest ornithologist across the world.
