Marilyn Monroe: The Story, the Icon, the Death

Describes the life and death of one of America’s most treasured actress and icon.

She reigned gloriously. Beautiful, sexy, and irresistible; Marilyn Monroe surpassed the standards of beauty inspiring artists, movies, and even Tinker Bell. Her life however, was cut short and many feel by the hands of an unknown source. But by who? The mysteries and suspicions are endless but let’s review the facts before making our own assumptions.

Marilyn Monroe came from a troubled home of an ill mother. Some suspect that the mental illness was hereditary and passed to Marilyn(whose first name was Norma Jean Baker). As a result of her mother’s illness she was passed from foster homes throughout her childhood and later said to have been sexually molested in the process. Norma drastically changed her appearance and name on a venture to be a model. If only she knew where that venture would take her. She modeled briefly before making her way into fame as an actress. Her fame instantly caught on and she became one of Hollywood’s most sought after actresses.Although her sexuality is part of the appeal that made her famous it often was opposed and mocked by many. She was often type-casted as the “dumb blond”. Marylin often within these times started using the assistance of prescription medications and often missed shoots or showed up late. She also married Joe DiMaggio for awhile. She also married Arthur Miller even after much discussion about her husbands link to Communism.Monroe suffered a miscarriage during her marriage to Miller. Her behavior also became more erratic as she was said to burst out cursing and throwing tantrums on set.

Marilyn started seeing a psychiatrist who confirmed that she would be prescribed drugs from many physicians at one time. Marylin often complained about insomnia. The use of her medication along with alcohol soon led to her hospitalization. Her last completed film was the Misfits, which was written by her husband (who she was having problems with at the time), the actors once again complained that Marilyn would throw tantrums often and disrupt filming. Marilyn and Arthur soon split and her consumption of drugs and alcohol led to many more hospitalizations.

Marilyn soon became acquainted with the president John F. Kennedy and his family. Their relationship was rumored to be much more than just friendly.  The two were often seen flirting and leaving together. However, advisers were said to warn Kennedy that the affair would severely damage his reputation and he officially had his number changed. Marilyn began calling the switch board trying to reach him with no end. John’s brother, Bobby soon intervened and was said to have then also gotten in a sexual relationship with Marilyn. Robert was said to visit Marilyn very often. However, the affair ended very similarly to that of her and his brother.

The day that Marilyn died she had been said to have placed multiple calls to Robert with only the answer to leave him alone. Bobby later that day was said to visit her along with a physician. Afterwards she was said to have called her psychiatrist very distraught and placed several other calls to friends and her ex step son. The friends that she spoke to said that Marilyn did not seem depressed and was actually quite hopeful about an upcoming movie she was offered to star in. Marilyn was said to have died before midnight due to a barbiturate enema that was given to her. When found, she was laying face down with her arms lying straight down by her sides with her legs laid straight out, there was a pill bottle open and arranged next to her. Those who arrived at the scene described it to appear staged.

And so it was ruled a suicide, that is until people really started to think about Marilyn’s connections, possible enemies, along with the strange way she died. Many theories suggest that the mob killed the starlet. This is due to ties that some feel have been between Kennedy and the mafia. Marilyn, being in such close council to Kennedy may have had privy knowledge that no one wanted out. Another theory is that her psychiatrist did it, he had been with her the day of her death and would have had knowledge as to giving her a barbiturate enema. Some believe that it was simply a suicide. Marilyn after all had been having mental problems, stress, heart ache, and was addicted to pain killers. However, I feel this may be doubtful due to the fact that she popped pills and would not have known how to construct the enema that killed her. If she wanted to kill herself or if it was even an accident she would have died of an overdose by mouth.

And my favorite theory. The Kennedys did it. Could it have been Bobby? She had confided in many that she was pregnant with his child and that he had wanted her to have an abortion. He had been seen at her house the same day with a physician(one who could have administered the enema). Marilyn had been planning on taking their affair public-seems like a motif for me. Perhaps it was John. He may have been scorn about her relationship with his brother, maybe he feared that in going public with either his or his brother’s relationship could have damaged his political career. Also, maybe he feared she would eventually let out her knowledge of his ties with the mafia. The theories are endless, and regardless the end is the same-the young aspiring sex icon is dead. Which ever direction you are pulled, is your affair, in all we are only left with the facts and fiction and both are hard to pull apart and sort through.
