Michael Dell and the Word Delete

The Life of the man behind the Computer Brand.

Does the name Michael Dell gives a ring to you? Is it about the computer function delete or something else? Michael Dell didn’t actually invented the delete function in computers but established a brand of computer that carries his family name, Dell.

Born on 23 February 1965 in Houston, Texas;   Michael Saul Dell’s parents liberally practiced Judaism. His father is a dentist while his mother works as a stockbroker; business simply runs in his veins. He attended Herod Elementary School and completed Memorial High School in Houston, Texas on which he didn’t excelled academically but he proved more than what school recognitions could amount for. His life achievements could be better understood by how he attained it by age.

Age 12 – he formed a direct marketing company which offered national stamp auction through the mail. He earned $ 2,000 on the venture.

Age 15 – he got his first time to touch a brand new Apple II computer on which his reaction was to dismantle it into parts and assembling it back afterwards.

Age 16 –  he developed a scheme to sell subscriptions to the Houston Post through target marketing and sold most of it to newlyweds. He made $ 18,000 and bought three computers and a brand new car.

Age 18 – he deviced a way of selling customised computers directly to customers which is a brilliant idea considering he did it from cheap surplus parts while computer companies were selling their products wholesale to retailers which becomes expensive when sold.

He started college with aspiration of becoming a doctor, his parents began to worry about his grades that he was compelled to promise to quit his computer venture and devote himself to his studies if the business doesn’t perform well but by the end of the year company profits was $ 50,000 – $ 80,000 a month.

Age 19  -  In 1984, Michael dropped out of the University of Texas as a freshman to run PCs Limited   ( the company would later become Dell Computer Corporation then finally, Dell, Inc. ) in his room at Dobie Center, a residence hall in front of the university.

Age 21 – his company offered the first toll-free technical support and on-site service in the PC business services which later became standard practice throughout the computer manufacturing industry.

Age 23 –  In 1988 PCs Limited had a name change to Dell Computer Corporation and had an initial public offering that valued the company at more than  $80 million.

Age 27  – In 1992, Dell Computer Corporation was listed on the Fortune 500 list of five hundred largest companies in the world making Michael Dell the youngest CEO to head a Fortune 500 listed company.

Age 31 -  Dell introduced online purchasing, even without advertising, the site managed to sell 30 to 50 computers a day. This expanded to an average of $ 18 million a day online in late 90’s.

Age 33 -  Michael Dell  founded MSD Capital LP an investment firm aimed to invest in various small companies on Dell’s behalf.

Age 34 –   In 1999, Dell announced gigabuys.com which is an online store featuring computer-related products.

Age 35 -  Dell Computer Corporation was named third most admired company in the US by Forbes Magazine.

Age 39 -  In 2004, Dell stepped down as CEO for Dell Inc. retaining position as chairman of the board.

As of 2009, Forbes estimates Dell’s net worth at $ 12.3 billion. Despite his success, Michael Dell has proven his sense of compassion unlike some businessmen vying to earn more with their commercial success. He and his wife, Susan were known to have provided $50 million grant from their foundation with which the University of Texas at Austin announced in 2006, the grant was directed to bring excellence in children’s health and education. In 2007, he returned as CEO with the resignation of his former chairman Kevin Rollins. He has written his autobiography in 2000 in the book “Direct from Dell, Strategies that Revolutionized an Industry”. He had been the subject of recognitions as “Entrepreneur of the Year” by Inc., magazine, “Man of the Year” from PC Magazine, “Top CEO in American Business” by Worth Magazine and “CEO of the Year” by Financial World, Industry Week and Chief Executive Magazines.  Michael Dell lives with his wife Susan in Austin, Texas with their children. Their residence has been touted to be the 15th largest house in the world.
