Mother Teresa took her vow as a nun on May 24, 1931. Though she started her service as a teacher who taught geography and catechism to the students of St. Mary’s High school in Calcutta, the poverty and poor people made impacts on her life. She got permission from her superiors and left her job in 1948 to start her service to the poorest of the poor, who lived in the slums of Calcutta, suffering like animals.

When the entire world looked at the people suffering with leprosy with hatred, Mother Teresa hugged them with love and treated them with care. The Missionaries of Charity which was started with 12 members in Calcutta is now having more than 4000 nuns and they are taking care of lots of orphanages, charity centers (worldwide), homeless people, refugees, blind & disabled people. Now this “Missionaries of Charity” is there in more than 100 countries.

She stepped down from the head position of “Missionaries of Charity” in the year 1997 on March 13. She celebrated her 87th birthday on August 27, 1997 and died after few days on September 5, 1997. After her death, the Holy See started the process of beatification, which is the second step towards canonization. In the year 2002, as an Indian Woman named Monica Besra told that a beam of rays from Mother Teresa’s picture cured her abdomen Tumor, Vatican recognized it as a miracle done by Teresa and hence beatified her along with the title “Blessed Teresa of Calcutta” in the year 2003, October 19. Canonization will happen if a second miracle happens.

Though there were lots of opposition happened in her early days of service, that she do service only to the poor people who get converted to Christianity and forces people towards Christianity, no one can refuse her great service to humanity, which most of these complaining people couldn’t even think of.
