New Zealand’s Last Adventurer: Sir Edmund Hillary 1919-2008
A tribute to New Zealand’s own pioneer.
Sir Edmund Hillary was the last of the great adventurers and his service to this country will be honored and remembered. The government and the people of New Zealand due to his outstanding citizenship to his country and for all of his worldly achievements have requested a State funeral. He will remembered throughout the world for conquering Mt. Everest and his mountaineering skills and in Nepal for his humanitarian work that bought education and schools to the Sherpa children and people living in the upper regions of the mountains.
Sir Edmund Hillary will long be immortalized for his commitment to Antarctica and the support work to the conservation and preservation of this large continent. His own compatriots honored his brilliant life and were very happy that he accepted a likeness of himself that placed upon the five-dollar note. He is the only New Zealander to have this happen. In 1996, a survey showed that the people of New Zealand had named Sir Edmund Hillary as the most revered New Zealander of all time. In this survey, he outshone rugby legends, former heads of state and many politicians. He has always been a very amicable and a much-loved person throughout the world. His life has influenced many New Zealanders and countless other people around the world.

He was a legend in his own time, and the humanitarian work he began continues on. New Zealanders are quite right to feel proud of him. He was a unique person.
