Prince William’s mother was the first wife of Prince Charles, Lady Diana Spencer. She became the popular Princess Diana and was sadly killed in a car accident in France. 1997 the world was shocked by her death and sad for the two sons she left behind.

The Princes William and Harry were brought up by their mother to look outside of the confines of Royalty and see the world. They were encourage to think of others less fortunate than themselves, Prince William certainly carried out her wishes.

Despite mutterings from anti royals and folk who maybe slightly jealous of the privilages the young Prince has, he tries to find out more about those in need. He is the second in line for the throne, to become the King of England. At the age of 27 he is passionate about the various charities set up in his mother’s name and has become the patron of some, taking over from her. He has continued to support many good causes and several are done away from the limelight. Other times he invites the press to help promote his concerns for certain issues and charities.

One of the charities is Centrepoint, a charity for the homeless of the UK. Recently he spent a freezing night on the streets with the homeless. He had minimal protection from bodyguards and was nearly run over by a street cleaner, while he slept in an alley in one of the city of London streets. His bed was a sleeping bag and he lay by the garbage bins as a way of highlighting the homeless problems. Prince William spoke about his fear for those vunerable people.

“I cannot, after one night, even begin to imagine what it must be like to sleep rough on London’s streets night after night,” said the prince, clearly shaken by the experience.

“Poverty, mental illness, drug and alcohol dependency and family breakdown cause people to become and then stay homeless.”

He and his brother assisted with preparing packages for the survivors of the tsunami in 2004 and he has spent many hours on projects in Africa and the HIV/Aids plight. He is his mother’s son and has a compassionate personality, good qualities for a future King.

I hope he has a little more wisdom than his mother, but it is good that he has her compassion for others. Centrepoint is a very worthwhile cause to support.

I suppose he is following in her foot steps but can only wonder how much longer the Monarchy will last? And at what point will he be told to act differently.

I am impressed that he is willing to find out how the unfortunate survive.

Lady Diana was a very generous person, it’s good to know her son resembles her.

Your title is the exact words I said when I heard of his sleep-out. I think he’s coming to NZ to open the World Rugby Cup in 2011.

You are so right. Both the princes are like their mother in the compassion they show to vunerable poeple. I think our country is going to be in good hands eventually. A good post.

At least when he is King, he will know what others endure

I believe that this Prince or both brothers has the heart of Princess Diana.

I think he is a credit to his mother. Seems like a sound young man to become king.

I am sure the Prince spent the night on the streets with the best of intentions and I am sure he learned something in the process. But he was a tourist there. And you know the words of that song by Pulp “and no-one likes a tourist…”

So I guess I can’t quite decide if I like or dislike what he’s done there. A little of both, I think.

Inna

I have always thought he would do his mother proud and I think he is.

The point of his doing this was to draw attention to their plight. He knows he could never be the same as them, he uses the press for the good of others, not himself.
I am not a huge royal fan, but I see good in this young man.

Thanks for your comments

He is a tribute to society. You have served the purpose well to tell us of his heart.

The ‘people’s’ princess supported so many charities around the world and it’s good to see her sons have inherited her empathy – nice post Glynis:)
