Stephen King Biography
Biography on the life of Horror book author Stephen King.
Stephen Edwin King was born on September 21, 1941 in Portland, Maine. His father was Donald King and his mother was Nellie Ruth Pillsbury King. He was raised by his mother because his parents divorced when he was a toddler. Until the age of 11 he lived in Indiana and Connecticut. After that he remained in Durham, Maine. When his mothers parents were ill she went to take care of them, but sadly they died.
His first job was at a facility for mentally challenged people working in the kitchen. In, 1966 he graduated from Lisbon Falls High School in Durham. When in University he was very involved with writing in the school. He wrote a newspaper column in the school’s newspaper and was on the student senate. He was very much against the war in Vietnam and supported anti-war groups. His views on the war were that it was unconstitutional. In 1970 he completed all of his schooling by graduating from the University of Maine and now qualified to teach high school level English. In the library at the University he had met a woman named Tabitha Spruce, little did he know that they would end up getting married. Their marriage took place in January of 1971.
Later that year he got his first teaching job at a public high school in Hampden, Maine. He would teach for two years because in 1973 Doubleday & co. agreed to publish his novel “Carrie”. This meant that he no longer had to teach and could now write full-time. Due to his mothers bad heath, he moved his family closer to her. Sadly, while “Salem’s Lot” was being published, his mother died from cancer at the age of 59.
After “Carrie” was published he moved too Boulder, Colorado for less than a year. When he returned to Maine, he bought a home in Western Maine. In 1977 his family spent a few months in England. When he came back he purchased a home in Center Lovell, Maine and they lived in this for a short period of time. They moved yet again to Orrington so he could teach creative writing at the University of Maine. They got a second home in Bangor and left the Center Lovell home as a summer house.
Today the family spends their summers in Florida and have three children, Naomi Rachel, Joe Hill, and Owen Philip. Some of Stephen Kings most famous novels include, “Salem’s Lot”, “Christine”, “It”, “Pet Cemetery”, “Cujo”, “Carrie”, and “The Shinning”. Stephen King novels are read by millions of people and he is still recognized as one of the greatest scary authors of all time. He is currently 62 years old.
