The Controversial Jerry Lee Lewis

When Jerry Lee came to fame in the American 1950’s his music and life rattled more than a few nerves.

With songs like “Great Balls of Fire” and “High School confidential”, Jerry definitely threw 1950’s America for a loop. Many critics said that his music was too “suggestive.” Now personally I think sometimes people read too much into songs. Just because something may be new doesn’t mean it’s necessarily bad.

I think Jerry was just out to live, to celebrate life, if that’s a crime well then we are all guilty to some degree unless you are living under a rock. Jerry stirred more controversial press coverage in England after marrying 13 year old Myra Gail Brown. On that particular issue maybe Jerry could have used better judgement, but nonetheless, what was done was done.

Her parents, while not at first happy with the idea decided that if he and Myra loved each other then they(her parents) could learn to live with it. I may disagree with someone’s choices, but nonetheless I acknowledge that they are their choices to make, I believe this was Myra’s parents mindset as well.

Jerry is one of rock music’s earliest controversial figures, when rock music became popular in the 1950’s many parents banned their children from hearing it. Early rock music was inspired, according to legend, by african tribal dance rituals. Given that there was much racism in the 1950’s I believe this contributed to white suburban parents condemning rock and roll.

One woman was quoted as saying “what place do African mating dances have in American society.” To me that sounds like a culturally prejudiced comment. Now granted people like Jerry Lee played up rock and roll’s “rebellious” image, but I think most of it was hype.

Despite all the controversy(which some would consider tame given today’s rock star’s antics) Nobody is disputing that Jerry Lee is a gifted musician. I think people should listen to the music for what it is and not try to read so much into it.
