Do You Remember The Last Time You Used a Paper Dictionary?
A refresher on what can be found in a good old fashioned dictionary.
I sincerely cannot remember the last time I used a paper dictionary. Ironically, last week I acquired some Spanish/English dictionaries and a set of Espanola (Spain) dictionaries, but I was unsure if I even had a regular Mirriam-Webster Dictionary when this assignment came up. I do have some antique dictionaries that date back to 30’s but seriously doubt many of their meanings may not even apply to our current society.
We all know that a dictionary tells us the meanings of words, proper usage (nouns, verbs, adjectives) . But we also forget that sometimes it can help us with remembering the metric system, astrological symbols, business symbols, weather symbols, and even mathematical symbols. The particular version that I reviewed also included a listing of Nations of the World with their proper pronunciations and population. Also a listing of U.S. cities and Canadian places with their population. The section that I found truly interesting and plan to review further is a small section called Foreign Words & Phrases. Some really great fun to use phrases in here!
With today’s technological advances, each time my son asks me for a meaning of a word – we look it up in the online dictionary. Sad to say, but I don’t know if I show him a paper dictionary if he would know what it is.
