Free Dictionary is a Great Web Tool
The Free Dictionary is a wonderful tool, not only for the writer!
A wonderful tool to add to your growing collection would be the Free Dictionary. It has many features and options available on that site that go beyond a regular dictionary. You can set up the Free Dictionary as your home page to view it first thing when you open up your browser. However the one flaw, if you clear your cookies the page will vanish. All your settings and what you saved will not be left to view. No sign up is required on the site, however if they offered that choice we might be able to keep our separate page being saved when we delete our cookies.
When using the search box tool, you can choose between searching Free Dictionary, Google or Bing. After making your choice of where you want your information to be searched from, then you choose what type of information you are looking for. That list would include choices such as an article or word, starts with, ends with or text. This option of choosing article or word, starts with, ends with or text is only available to use when you choose the Free Dictionary setting.
When using the search engine from the Free Dictionary, the amount of information is overwhelming and quite extensive. Once you enter the word or search you are looking for, another page appears. The page that appears is full of information on that search. Not only does it give you the meaning in the dictionary and thesaurus, it will give you an extensive list of the word or article you are searching for in a variety of search methods. The tool will not only search the dictionary or thesaurus, it will also check the medical dictionary, legal, financial, wikipedia, acronyms, and idioms. This only works when you use the Free Dictionary setting as the search engine.
When you choose Google or Bing as your search engine, you will only receive links to articles and sites. You will not receive dictionary information, or any of the other tools offered from Free Dictionary.
On the Free Dictionary page option, not the Google or Bing searching, you will be given the opportunity to save the word you have searched for. Again if you clear your cookies, that information is lost.
On the main page you will see some interesting modules to read and see. Those modules do not continue with your Free Dictionary searching other then saving a word feature. Those modules would include word of the day, in the News, article of the day, spelling bee, quotation of the day, this day in history, today’s birthday, the word match up game, the weather, hangman and an rss feed to the English forum. You can choose which modules you want to keep on that page. Again, it will not save your page that you created if you clear your cookies.
They also offer a variety of software to use with the site. That would include a toolbar, desktop assistant, and the right click browser ad on.
The Free Dictionary when searching for articles or words, is truly worth time investing in.
