I Want a Bigger Dictionary!
I watch the O’Reilly Factor on a fairly regular basis. I don’t watch because I necessarily like Bill O’Reilly. I agree with him on some things, and vehemently disagree on others. Mr. O’Reilly seems like a decent enough person, but we come from two very different backgrounds. I can appreciate that. The two biggest reasons I watch his show are for the Pinheads and Patriots segment, and the Word of the Day. The Word of the Day segment makes me crazy. Where does his staff come up with these words? I need a much larger dictionary with much larger print. I never hear most of these words used in conversation. Ever. The least the man could do is use the word in a sentence that would give us a small clue as to the meaning of the word.
When I was a kid, I used to read the dictionary, mostly to see if I could find the definitions and or word origins of some of the cuss words my dad used when he was working on some truck or other. I never did, but eventually, Dad used them in enough sentences that I figured out their meanings. Some of them, I still won’t use. It is good to know when your kid needs their mouth washed out with soap, however, whether you use the soap or not. I don’t. I drank some Dawn when I was little- I still remember how that worked for me. Dawn hasn’t smelled nearly so appetizing since, I can assure you. I don’t even use it, because of the bad memories associated with it. (Shudder!)
Some of the words Bill O’Reilly puts out sound like they could be cusswords. I am certain they are not, as this is something he would not air. They still make me want a new, updated version of the giant dictionary they used to keep in the school library. Remember that dictionary? The one that was so big, it had its very own pedestal? I loved that dictionary. I want one of those, with all the old, almost unused or unused words in the English language, and all the new words that get added every few years. The one that contained all the words in every flavor of English we could imagine. It was quite a beautiful book. I want a new dictionary.
