Best Hairstyles for Men

A description of the latest hot men’s cuts and there really is something for everyone!

Aside from the mullet, which is generally agreed to be gone (although there have been, sadly, a few signs of a possible revised comeback – think Bob the trainer from Biggest Loser and he’s hot), there are lots of choices for men’s hair. Some work better than others for our faces and lifestyles, so here’s the scoop on the hottest styles this year.

Long & Layered

Messy but structured, this top heavy layered look is virtually maintenance free. The beauty is that it is supposed to look like you haven’t put any effort into it.

This still suits square, oblong or rectangular face shapes and tells the world that, like Johnny Depp, you are creative, down-to-earth and trendy.

Curls

Curls are being embraced this year. No perms (yet!) but if you have naturally curly hair, men are beginning to work with them not against them. Watch for long and disheveled cuts for the bigger, looser curl and short, tidy one-length cuts for the tighter, smaller curls. A little texture cream, pomade or mousse and your ready to go.

Any face shape can pull of curls provided the size of the curls is proportionate to the size of the facial features. Curls tell the world that you are calm, cool and collected.

Buzzcut

The easiest cut by far, this simple selection does a great job of making the jaw-line look stronger, hiding receding hairlines and baldspots and turning anyone into a serious, masculine army recruit. However, it is also very popular right now with celebrities.

Try this if you have a round or oblong face and give off the impression that you are an in-charge, organized, classy, sophisticated and confident.

Textured Bedhead

Popularized by David Beckham, the carefully disheveled look begins with a simple clean men’s haircut – shorter sides and back, left longer at the top. With some pomade, add some careful flow and volume to the top and you’ve got it. It’s simple and stylish.

However, this style is best with the man blessed with the square shaped face. It says you are trendy but refined, classy but a bit rebellious.

Faux-hawk

Punk is back, so they say. In this case, its come mainstream. A smaller, less “in your face” version of the famous Mohawk, this involves a gradual fanning of the fair on top of the head towards the middle creating, essentially, a version of the Mohawk, now coined the faux-hawk.

Men with oblong and heartshaped faces wear this style well and announce that they are fashionable, trendy and graceful.

Fortunately, for men’s hairstyles it is always about evolution not revolution so you can safely expect to keep in style for a long time with any of the above safe choices. A good hairstylist will know when to tweak the style to keep it fresh.

I love the long and messy look… Buzzcut, not so much. I’m a HUGE hair fan though! Thanks for the interesting post!

Of you had any clue what you were talking about, You’d know that David Beckham was the one who influenced the faux hawk (not necessarily the Textured Bedhead). But it originated in 2002, when (now former) Dior Homme designer Hedi Slimane rocked it. It’s totally over by now. Totally!
