The sports shops are a good source of warm clothing. After all clothes made for ski wear are manufactured to withstand the toughest of conditions. Check out ski boots and ski jackets. What could be better in those cold, icy winds? Search out the High Street sports shops and also check online stores – like everywhere nowadays, there are always sales and you’re bound to find a bargain. Don’t worry, it doesn’t matter if you’ve never been anywhere near a piste – those clothes will grace any High Street with distinction.

How about the clothes next to your body? Well, there are plenty of companies around that are creating thermal underwear, and it’s no longer regarded as “naff”, it’s now considered sensible and the designs and colours are very stylish too. You can buy cool and stylish and tops that will sit snugly next to your body and protect you from all the elements.

With winter clothing, I think layers are important. You know the feeling, with all your thermal underwear, T-shirts, jumpers, cardigans and snug coats, you’re lovely and warm. But as soon as you go indoors; say to the shops, the restaurant, the pub or the office, you’re just too warm. You can always peel off some layers, like cardigans and jumpers and just sit in the pub in your T-shirt. It’s easy to take things off, but it’s much better to be warm outside.

Also a piece of advice I was given many years ago was to never have too tight clothing in winter. It’s better to have loose clothing, because then there is room for the air to get trapped between your skin and your clothes and this air warms up with your body. So keep these tight, figure-hugging clothes for the nightclubs, but when you want to be warm, wear loose clothing. Always remember to hang loose!

Remember much of your body heat is lost through your head, so headgear is very important. Choose a warm woolly hat to protect you from those icy winds. No point in being all wrapped up but leaving your head exposed – you’ll still lose a lot of your heat that way. Protect those lovely hands of yours too with warm, comfy thermal gloves. Again the sports shops and shops specialising in ski-wear have excellent choices for both gloves and headgear. So, shop around as there are plenty of bargains out there. It doesn’t need to cost a fortune to keep warm.
