Everything Google on Your iPhone or iPod Touch

Everything Google on Your iPhone or iPod Touch

Here is how to access all your Google Services on your iPod Touch or iPhone.

So you’re a Googleholic, and you just got your new iPhone or iPod Touch. It’s easy to get most of the services Google offers on your device.

Your GMail is easy to set up. Just open the mail app and select Gmail from the list. Put in your account details and you’re off. You can also import emails off your computer by going into iTunes and under your iPod/iPhone select ‘info’, then ‘Mail Accounts’. Now that you have email on your device, we will next import your Gmail contacts. When in Gmail, go to your contacts and click ‘Export’. Select the Outlook CSV option and click Export. Open the file with Outlook, then go into iTunes and get the contacts to sync with Outlook. Now when you connect your device to iTunes, your Outlook contacts, including your Gmail contacts, will be synced automatically to your device.

To use calender, start by downloading the Google Sync Tool (which can be found by searching Google or on the Google Calendar Help Section) and installing it on your computer. On setup, supply your account details and select “1 way: Google Calendar to Microsoft Outlook Calendar”. Then go to iTunes ,under your iPhone select info, then select “Sync Calendars with Microsoft Outlook”. Your Calendar will transfer to your device next time you connect it.

The next part is essential for a large number of services: installing the Google Mobile App onto your device. This gives access to online services such as Doc, Tasks, Reader, Notebook and more. After choosing a service it will take you to the web page, so it is worth noting that you bookmark each service for quicker access in Safari. Youtube is already integrated into the iPhone OS, as is Maps. Google Earth can also be downloaded for global satiliete imagery in the palm of your hand (Note that if you use Earth over a 3G network, it could incur large data charges).

Finally, if you use Google Talk, there are a few alternative apps that can be used on the iPhone for such a thing. Most of them cost a small amount, but a few are free. The one I use is IM+ Lite which works with not only Google Talk, but lots of other messengers such as MSN, Yahoo!, and more. Otherwise, if you would prefer the traditional Google Talk, use the online gadget (under the Google Mobile App)

That covers nearly everything that Google offers that can be used on the iPhone. Note that web services like Blogger and Picasa Web Albums will work in the Safari Browser regardless.
