How to Turn an iPod Touch Into an iPhone – Almost

How to Turn an iPod Touch Into an iPhone – Almost

This guide teaches you how to make free calls to both landlines and mobile phones using an iPod Touch. This can also allow iPhones to make calls through 3G and Wi-Fi.

Phone service is the largest difference between owning an iPhone and an iPod Touch. This guide  teaches you how to be able to call both landlines and mobiles on your iPod, taking advantage of VoIP(voice over Internet Protocol). (NOTE: This only works if you are connected to the internet).

Items Needed:

  • An iPod Touch
  • A Computer
  • “iPhone earphones”, or earphones with a microphone built in with only one output jack.

Steps:

1.       First, go into the App Store on your iPod, or iTunes, and get the free application called “Fring”.

2.       Once you’ve installed Fring, go into the application and select “New User”

3.       Fill out all of the information that is needed.

 4.       After you`ve filled out the information, you will encounter a screen just like this one. If you have an account with Skype, you`d probably want to use it here, if not, select SIP.

 5.       This will bring up a screen with available Internet phone carriers. For this guide, we`ll use VoipStunt. Select VoipStunt.

6.       Now, put down the iPod for a second and use your computer to download the VoipStunt PC caller from www.voipstunt.com. Install the program onto your computer, and run it. All that you need to do from there is to create an account, and you can use the program on your computer too. I personally find it useless to have the account creation in the program itself, but that’s just me.

7.       Enter your credentials for VoipStunt onto the screen presently on your iPod. Press “Login” when completed.

 8.       Once you’re done with entering credentials, you will see a screen like this(very similar to the screen you saw before entering your information and all, but now, with a check beside SIP, meaning that it’s all set for calling with SIP).

9.       To make a call, simply push the “Dialer” button, which will show you a numerical keypad, not unlike the iPhone one. Now, before you start making calls, put in your headphones with a mic(duh!), and select, using the flag, the country which you will be DIALLING TO. Note that when using VoipStunt, there are select places where you can call for free, Canada, USA, and Britain being a few of them. To see more information, see http://www.voipstunt.com/en/free.html. To close the menu after you’ve selected the country, simply touch the flag button again.

10.   Finally, dial your number, and push the green “SIP” button to make your call. You will hear a tone in your earphones as the system dials your number. To end the call, push “End Call”.

 11.   Congratulations! You’ve set up Internet phone service onto your iPod Touch!
