Howard Stapleton is a man from  Britain who invented  a device to help stop teens from loitering back in 2005. It was a frequency only teens could hear. These tones did not affect adults as they could not hear them.

Of course with the brilliance of  teenagers they took this technology to the next level and so Mosquito ring-tones were born. The actual person who discovered and put into effect this phenomenon is unknown but whoever discovered it made a  ring-tone adults could not hear. Used in schools and places phones are not supposed to be, adults do not even know the phone is ringing. So, SMS becomes virtually undetectable and  the deception goes on.

It is a medical fact that as we age our hearing deteriorates and we as adults are unable to hear certain frequencies. This happens to all adults as we get older, but teens hearing is still young and very keen.

Teachers everywhere are slowly discovering the use for these ring-tone by their students, in fact I work in a driving school and one of our instructors tried the tones out on me. He has ulterior motives though and plans on using them the way they were supposed to be used to annoy the kids. He had downloaded many ring-tones and tried them all out on me. Some of them I could hear slightly, some I could not hear at all,  but one of them drove me crazy. I actually walked into another room to stop the sound. It was piercing to me and was not pleasant at all. My co-workers were also in the room and nor he or she could not hear it at all.

Here is a link so you can test yourself and listen to these unique tones. They even have ages so you can hear some of them.

To me this reminds me of dog whistles used to deter them from doing something you don’t want them to do, or to train them, but unlike our furry friends teens are very wise sometimes and seemed to have turned the tables on all of us adults.

What is your teen up to? Do they have a secret tone that you don’t know about on their cell phone? In church or in places they are not supposed to be receiving text messages or making calls are they looking at their phones trying not to be noticed? Check out their phones or ask them if hey have ever heard of these unique ring-tones you might be surprised at what you find out.

In London there’s a device they used to ward off teenagers that were hanging around at night disturbing the peace. The device makes a sound that is so annoying you have to move away from it. Interestingly, It only affect those under the age of twenty and only they can hear it. It was used near where I lived!

I listened to one of these ‘mosquito ringtone test’ sites and I was surprised that I can just barely detect it. A little stronger in one ear that the other, but a definite ‘fullness’ swells in my head when the sound is on, like taking a deep breath in and holding it… that sort of ‘ear pop’ thing goes on.
I really have to relax to ‘hear’ it, -I might imagine that if subjected to this bombardment for several hours I might develop a headache and aversion for whatever location I was in, and want to move away from it.

I worked for a food manufacturing plant back in New York, and we had annual hearing tests taken in a soundproof van outside of the facility. -Hardly soundproof, -we could all hear the roar of the cooling fans on the end of the building so they had to park the van on the other side of the facility for the exams. Some people could hear the nearby passing of a rail train (as did I) but I also could head the examiner on the other side of the ’soundproof wall’ moving around in his squeaky office chair, puling a desk drawer open, closing it, etc., -and at one point he dropped his pen or pencil and had to go after it… I asked him later if this happened. -He was impressed, yes, he did drop his pen and had to get out of the chair, pull it away from the examination console and crawl under the desk to retrieve it..

-Not bad for a then-42 year old, eh?

I rather imagine that I’d be one of those lucky few whom can hear the ‘Taos Hum’ as well, should I ever visit Taos, New Mexico.

And oh, -my last hearing test results when I worked at that place? Mixed… -the examiner said that I sporadically missed some ‘obvious’ tones but seemed to repeatedly pick-up many high-pitched tones that nearly everyone else in my group, completely missed. I ‘passed the text’ to the requirements of the employers, but the examiner wanted to perform the test over again for his own satisfaction he said, but I was needed back in my dept. and had to decline the re-test…

You would think by now I’d stop saying, “Wow…I wonder what they’ll come up with next!?!”
From now on if I hear a mosquito, I’ll first wonder if it’s a bug or a phone…do I spray it or answer it?! :)

I have never heard of these ring tones before, but I can imagine the teens having fun with thme at their teachers’ expense. Good work.

isn’t technology wonderful! What can seem to be a solution to one problem can create its antithesis.

Interesting read, linda. It’s great what technology can do. It’s a great way to find out what people are up to.

this is really cool. have not heard of it. I guess it would be great for teens that want to show their parents and grandparents just how old they are lol

Hah- those things are both annoying and entertaining. Currently at our school there was a case where 4 people all had them ringing at the same time (sigh). We have 1 teacher that is getting on in her years, and one that is in her mid-thirties. The teacher in her mid-thirties was able to hear it, but the 51 yr old teacher wasn’t able to.

Interested, eh? Proves that it doesn’t ALWAYS work.

Cool article.
