The iPhone 3G: At Last Defeated?

With the new Palm Pre coming out next month, how long will Apple’s dominance with the iPhone 3G last?

When the iPhone was released, Apple set an ambitious target to sell over 10 million iPhones. In 2008, they released the iPhone 3G which sold over 18 million devices. The iPhones dominance lasted for two years, but now a new phone is set to be released which is predicted to outsell the iPhone. However, Apple have fought  back with new iPhone OS software updates, as well as a possible new 2009 iPhone. Rumors suggest that Apple will come out with two new models: the iPhone Pro and a less sophisticated version. The iPhone Pro will include a 3.2 Megapixel Camera, as well as autofocus. A network switch is also predicted with Apple’s deal with AT&T running out a few weeks ago. A new deal with Americas largest network provider is very much wanted. Verizon seem to be the most capable of doing this, with their extremely fast 3G network which is currently on the Blackberry Storm. For the UK, the iPhones sole provider, 02, is set to become joined by Vodafone as the two iPhone sellers. This is a risky decision from Apple: it seems unlikely that all curent 02 users will move to Vodafone. With these points considered, will the Palm Pre beat Apple’s mighty iPhone 3G into submission or will it end up like RIM’s Blackberry, falling by the wayside?
