There are some rumors why Apple is going to come out with a 3rd generation iPhone this June.

1. AT&T is currently offering a refurbished 16GB (white or black) iPhone for $149. The 8GB model is also available for $99. If AT&T and Apple have a lot of iPhone 3G’s available, then this is a good way to get them out of stock.
2. AT&T is planning to upgrade their 3G network to a much higher speed. AT&T is going to increase the speed to 7.2Mb/s from the slower 3.6Mb/s.
3. With Apple clearing out the the Composite and Component AV Cables, Apple could come out with a universal cable that will allow both HDTV’s and SDTV’s to work with the expected new HD video iPhone feature.
4. Nobody has heard anything with Apple and Verizon or T-Mobile talking about a contract. If nobody has heard anything about a contract, then why would Apple want to wait to release a new phone?
5. AT&T has been wanting to extend their contract with Apple until 2011. Apple’s contract will expire in 2010. If it goes without extension, then Apple could reach out to other carriers and hope to get carrier that has a 4G network.
6. Apple has placed orders for 3.2 and 5 mega pixel camera sensors. Although 3.2 mega pixels wouldn’t be much of an upgrade from the low-quality 2 mega pixel camera.
7. Leaked Photos. There have been many leaked photos that show new features, like video recording, and battery percentage. Other photos include video attachments (also known as MMS).
8. Apple has placed many patent applications for new things. In one, they are looking to find a way beyond the passcode lock. It would use biometrics to scan a fingerprint, or recognise to shape of an ear before a call is made. In one patent photo is shows a jailbroken iPhone with “Installer” and “SMBPrefs” apps. Another patent a that was filed by Apple, was for a front camera, and maybe video chat capabilities.
9. Apple won’t be going to MacWorld anymore. Without MacWorld, Apple would either have to host their own private meetings, or announce products  at the WWDC. Steve Jobs will also be coming back from medical leave in late June. He loves to unveil exciting new products.
10. When Apple released the 3.0 iPhone BETA firmware, developers went crazy. People started going through the build looking for any new files that were not in the previous 2.2.1 firmware. The official release is expected to come out in summer this year. Hopefully when Apple releases the 3.0 firmware they will also release the 3rd generation iPhone.
