Top 15 iPhone and iPod Touch Apps: Part 3

Top 15 iPhone and iPod Touch Apps: Part 3

My top 15 favourite iPhone/iPod touch apps, as of June 30th 2009. Most of which are free, but a few are must-have paid apps as well.

Please note that the prices and content described in this article are as of June 30th 2009; prices or content on any of these apps may have changed since then. Some of these apps may require the iPhone 3.0 software update. The apps are also in no particular order.

iSwap Faces; by Black Frog Industries, LLC

If the title is not explanatory enough, this app gives you the ability to swap 2 faces in a photo. At first you might think it’s just a useless app, but they also have a lite version if you want to try it out. I was amazed with the results of the app, and had to buy the full version, which costs $1.99. iSwap Faces lets you save your photos to your photo library as well. The lite version is free, but adds a watermark to your photo and disables saving.

101 PhotoEffects; by MacPhun LLC

I bought this app when it was on sale for $0.99, and it’s worth every penny. This app lets you apply filters to any photo from your library. The app comes with 102 filters, and you can apply as many filters as you wish. The interface and controls are pretty simple, which makes this app very easy to use. I’ve actually edited a photo with iSwap Faces and then added filters to it with this app, and the results are amazing. I’m not sure if I’d pay full price for this app, but it is certainly worth the $0.99 that it is currently on sale for.

iSeismometer; by ObjectGraph LLC

This free app is certainly worth downloading. Ever want to see how shaky your friend’s hand is? Ever want to see how much your house is actually shaking? This seismograph app gives records the movement on all 3 axis of your iPhone/iPod touch, to give you good results. You can even pause and scroll through your data on this app.

Twitterific; by The Iconfactory

Although I’m fairly new to Twitter, I find this application to be one of the better Twitter apps out there. You have the ability to find your location, add a picture, post a Tweet, view other tweets, and much more. This is a free app, but it contains adds, which for the most part are not much of a bother. There is also a premium version for $3.99, but I am content with this version.

TweetDeck; by TweetDeck

This Twitter app is my favourite. I find the navigation controls are amazing, and it has such a good user interface. This app is free and there are no ads that I have noticed. I am also not aware of any paid version of TweetDeck. This app supports all your Twitter needs, whether it be pictures or tweets.

Pocket God; by Bolt Creative

If you are familiar with the app store, you are probably familiar with this app already. Pocket God sells for $0.99, and have updates almost every week. Each update provides a new way to sacrifice your islanders. You can shake your iPhone/iPod touch to create an earthquake (like I did in the picture), or you can tilt the device defy gravity and cause islanders to fall off the island. There are really too many options to list. For $0.99, you can’t go wrong.

Crop for Free; by Free the Apps!

I actually used this app for the Pocket God screenshot, I needed to rotate it to landscape view for this article. Not only does this app crop your photos, it also lets you rotate them with a tap of a button. It’s very easy to use, and it’s free! There are ads included, but they don’t really interfere with what you do. So if you have any pics in your album that need to be rotated or cropped, this app is a must-have! It saves the images as a copy, meaning your originals stay untouched.

Zombieville USA; by Mika Mobile

If you’re a fan of zombies or shooting games, I must recommend this app. It’s $1.99, contains lots of weapons that you can buy, a choice of 3 difficulties, and levels that get progressively more difficult. I’ve made it to level 26 on easy mode, and have seen 3 different types of zombies: Normal, Fast/Weak, and Slow/Strong. It’s a very fun app, and there is a lite version if you want to see what gameplay is like before purchasing.

Wild West Pinball; by OOO Gameprom

This free app has been dominating the free top 10 on the app store for the past while, and it’s no wonder why: this app is just so darn fun. I downloaded it unsure of how good the gameplay would be, and I discovered that I love pinball games. This game is fun, and is great for passing time. I really hope they come out with more levels or something, because it’s a very good quality game, with very simple controls.

Dictionary.com – Dictionary & Thesaurus; by Dictionary.com

Every now and then I discover a new dictionary app that is even better than the one I use. This one has replaced my last dictionary for sure. Why? Because it loads fasters, has a better user interface, and has this neat feature called Word of the Day, which is a nice way to learn new words. It’s also a thesaurus, which is a huge bonus. The best part is that it is free and has no ads, so if you are in class or at work and need to look up a word, this app is a must-have. Oh, and one last feature: if you are connected to the internet, you can click a speaker button, and it pronounces the word for you!

Pow; by Inedible Software

This app is not really anything too special, but if you are childish like me, you will love it! It’s free, with ads at the bottom, so you have nothing to lose for trying it (except your time, I guess). You choose which hand you punch with, and then pretend to punch someone with the iPhone/iPod touch in your hand, and it will make punch sound effects, and will display something like Pow, Bam, Biff and Bang on the screen. Also, if you are a fast puncher, it will record combos you do (a series of fast punches), and display it on the screen. Give the app a try, it’s pretty fun, especially if you have friends with this app, then you can go crazy and have a comic style fight!

WeatherEye; by The Weather Network / MeteoMedia

Although I prefer the simplicity of the default Weather app on the iPhone/iPod touch, this app is a nice one for looking up long term weather info. The one downside is the ads, but the results are very good and the app is free, so it’s worth getting. This app includes current data, short and long term data, hourly data and maps like you would see if you watched The Weather Network. If you want better results than the default weather app, give this one a try, the results you get are full of detail, and best of all, it’s free.

Lose It!; by FitNow

Ever try dieting, or watching your weight? I try, but I loose interest too fast. Here is an app that finally helps you watch your weight, loose your weight, and it’s free! When the app starts up, it asks for stuff like age, weight, gender, and your goal weight, and how many pounds you want to loose a week. I set my goal to about 40 pounds less than my actual weight. The app then says if I loose 2 pounds a week, I can make it to my ideal weight by December 22nd. I can then add what I eat to the app, and any exercise, and it shows me how many calories I have consumed/burned, and how many more calories I can consume. If I go over my limit, it will tell me, and alter the date that I will reach my goal. I recommend this app to anyone interested in their health/eating habits.

myHomework; by Rodrigo Neri

Although I am not yet back to school, I will certainly be using this application to keep track of my homework. This app is free, and has no ads. This app could very well be $4.99, but the creator must appreciate education and good educational software to go along with it. Whether you are in high school, college, university, or somewhere else, this app is a must-have for anyone that likes to keep their homework organized. You can add classes, with details to building & room numbers, and can set due dates and categories for the type of homework. Never forget an assignment or exam ever again.

9-Toolbox (Free Event); by e2ndesgn

This free app contains 9 tools. If you find not all the apps are useful, you can download them separately, instead of bundled. The app in the picture is a tip calculator, which is very useful if you are bad at math/lazy (like me). It also contains a currency converter, date calculator, days-until, national holidays, inclinometer, loan calculator, menstrual calendar, and a unit converter. I recommend the bundled version because it groups all these great apps in one, but if you just use a few of the tools, download them separately.

I double checked, and it is 101 PhotoEffects. It says this both on the app and on the iTunes store. :P
