Green Mother’s Day Gifts

Green Mother’s Day Gifts

Mother’s Day is one of those days that we feel pressured into buying a gift for our Mother. Stores bombard us with their selections of trinkets and knick-knacks that promise to show Mom how much we appreciate her. Most of this stuff is useless and detrimental to the environment. Don’t fall into this trap. Give your Mother something from the heart – something green.

Mother’s Day is quickly approaching and with it comes the pressure to get your Mother the perfect gift.  The retail sector recognizes this day as another opportunity to target the consumer.  They put out elaborate displays filled with flowery trinkets and knick-knacks, basically useless clutter.  I’m sure you’ve seen the promotions: ‘Nothing says ‘I love you, Mom’ better than…’  Don’t fall into this trap.

If you give it some thought I’m sure you can come up with a Mother’s Day gift that is unique, thoughtful and green. Your Mom will appreciate the extra thought that goes into a gift of this kind.

The following is a list of gift ideas to help you plan a unique, green Mother’s Day:

  1. Make it a ‘Mom’ day.  Do something special with your Mother.  Plan to spend a good portion of the day doing something she likes to do.

  2. Get out of the house.  Make it a day with just the family.  Take Mom hiking or to the lake or to a national park and have a picnic.  Hint: Don’t ask Mom to pack the lunch, clean up after it or pack the day pack on the hike – it’s still her special day.

  3. Cook for your Mother.  Cook a special meal for your Mother.  It doesn’t matter if you’re a good cook or not. Mom will appreciate a special meal that she doesn’t have to prepare.  Hint: Put flowers and candles, fancy place-mats and the good dishes on the table and she won’t care if the meal is wieners and noodles.
  4. Recycled jewellery.  This is not as weird as it sounds but you should get Mom’s permission first.  Offer to have one of her outdated pieces of jewellery reset into something modern.  Another option is to make her something special out of natural materials like shells and hemp.
  5. Organic perfume or cosmetics.  In keeping with our ‘green’ Mother’s Day gift ideas; look for organic perfume or cosmetics. There are plenty of stores on the Internet or with a bit of research you might even find something locally.
  6. Potted flowers or potted herbs.  You can’t go wrong with flowers and if they are locally grown it’s even better.  If your Mother is a cook then perhaps some potted herbs that she can use all summer would please her.
  7. Peace and quiet.  If your Mother is constantly running to one thing or another then maybe she would appreciate a quiet evening at home.  A bottle of wine and an evening stargazing may be her thing.

Did you notice the one thing all these ideas have in common? Your time. Each gift requires a certain amount of time to prepare. Time is the most precious gift you can give. So if nothing else plan to spend some time with you Mother on Mother’s Day.
