A Simple Woodworking Project: Gift Idea

A Simple Woodworking Project: Gift Idea

I have made several of these wood-working projects and while it is a bit too late for this Christmas, you can make these for other occasions and general gift-giving.

With peg legs that extend horizontally from the body by approximately 4-inches, a small hand-towel can be hung here. Positioned on either side of a curtained window, the curtains can be drawn-back by stuffing each one respectively between the legs of the duck on each side. Notice that this duck looks over his left shoulder and the next one looks over his right shoulder. They are intended to face each other as a pair for framing a curtained window over a kitchen sink.

Starting with a clean board (example shown below,) you can freehand-sketch your design. For this project we shall use a board that is 15-inches long, 6 1/2 inches wide by 1-inch thick.

A Clean Wooden Board to Begin the Woodworking Project

Sketch Your Design onto the Board

The lines here are broadened and darkened to highlight the general design. Your design can vary. You would probably just draw the design in pencil. The pencil, pen or marker lines will be sanded-off in the finishing stage so this doesn’t really matter what shows.

Drill the Holes for the Legs and Feet Now, While Still On the Whole Board

It is easiest to drill the holes for the legs and feet pegs now (positions marked in image below) while the designs are still on the whole board. After that, the individual units can be cut-out and you will not have to handle and drill the smaller unwieldy pieces. It is safer and more efficient to drill these holes now, instead of later.

Although I used 1/2-inch dowels and holes, if you use hardwood dowels, the holes et~al can be of a smaller diameter. Perhaps 3/8-inch works just as well. A 3/8-inch diameter softwood dowel (white pine, etc.) is not strong enough and can too easily break. In the most recent towel rack I built, I use oak (hard-wood) dowel rods. These oak dowel rods can be purchased at most home improvement centers in approximately 4-foot lengths for around $5.00 or less. That is enough to make legs for many of these creations, with stock left over for other projects. Save any unused wood stock for future projects.

Adorable! Even without the bottles of wine. A set of kitchen towels might go nicely with this.

Even with your unambiguous instructions and supporting illustrations, I would find some way to fuck this project up. I would be one to buy the finished product and then lie about making it myself. I envy all those who work with wood, and I’m sure those people will appreciate this crisp and informative instructional post. Merry Christmas, Stick.

I love it!!!!! My husband can’t go outside in the cold and he was thinking of getting into wood working. I hope he will make this for us!!!!
My daughter wants to make it, but she is EXTREMELY clumsy, thus we keep her away from power tool!
