The Time-honored Beauty of The Rose
The universality of the beauty of the rose is such that among the variety of flowers, its reputation is historically unsurpassable.
As we all know, the rose is one of the most familiar and most popular flowers in the world, known and cultivated throughout its history. Egyptian tombs contained dried roses obviating its reputation as a flower that is considered to be singular as far as its beauty is concerned. There are hundreds of different kinds of rose grown throughout the world, developed from a number of wild varieties. Growers continue their experiment in the way of constantly producing new species.
There are three classifications of rose, namely shrubs, bedding roses and climbers. Bedding roses are grown for blossoms that are cut, a type that is usually seen in a florist’s shop. Shrubs are generally used for the purpose of landscaping. They are plentiful, but the flowers are generally not cut; climbers, or ramblers, grow on vines, usually planted along a fence or wall.
The stems of most roses are prickly and the stalks are thorny. Most varieties are fragrant, while some have no scent at all. Some of these have a single ring of petals or tightly rolled layers of petals, with a fuzzy-looking yellow center, seen when they blossom and are full-blown. If protected from cold weather, a rose bush will bear flowers for several years. New plants are grown by cutting off a stalk and allowing it to develop its own roots in damp sand or water.
