Whether you’re looking to buy a microwave or renew your car insurance the cut-throat nature of sales means you can snap up a bargain on just about anything. Here’s how:

First do your research. Find out what the item you’re after retails for at various shops and try to ascertain whether or not it’s a popular item. If not, you’re in luck as the retailer will really want to make sale. If you see the product for less at one store, take that price to another. Some retailers wont just match it, they’ll take off another 5-10%. This technique works best on big ticket items such as white-goods and televisions, as well as at department stores.

Offer to pay cash if you get a small discount. Credit card transactions cost retailers and they’ll be happy to avoid fees. When haggling let the retailer know you are prepared to buy then and there.

When renewing insurance or choosing a phone or Internet plan, politely ask to speak to someone higher up. You won’t get far haggling with the people answering phones but a quick chat with a higher up can net you all sorts of discounts.

Become a regular at your favourite stores and chat to the salespeople. Retailers value customer loyalty and you’ll be more likely to score a discount at smaller retailers if they know you’re face. Making friends with the salespeople also means they might let you in on when sales are going to happen or when new items will be arriving.

Had your eye on a gorgeous piece of clothing that’s just out of your price-range? Check to see if the item has any flaws, such as make-up stains, a stray thread or a loose button. If so you’ll be able to get a discount as the retailer will want to unload the item.

Tell the retailer that if they give you a discount you’ll recommend them to all your friends and return the next time you need their products. This works extremely well with small retailers. Follow this up by taking a few of their business cards. Works a charm.

Most importantly, always be polite and smile.
