There are lots of different ways to spot a real diamond from a fake, however there is an exception to every rule and diamonds are no different.  The best thing to do is try some of these simple test and once you are pretty convinced that it is a real diamond then take it to a reputable appraiser, they may charge between $35.00 and $75.00 for this service but it is the only foolproof way to know if your diamond is real or not and they may also provide you with documents.

Color is probably the easiest way to help spot a fake.  If you look at your diamond in the light and see pretty colors like blue and pink, it is not real.  A real diamond should be clear with shades of gray.  If your diamond is loose you can place it on printed paper or newspaper, if you can see the print through the diamond then it is not real, a real diamond disperses light differently and you would not be able to see the print.

Another easy way to tell if it’s the real thing or not is to do what they call a fog test.  Put it up to your mouth and blow on it, if it stays foggy for two to four seconds, it is not real.  Diamonds disperse heat quickly and should clear up instantly, however if the diamond is really dirty it may not clear as quickly so you may want to clean it first.

If your diamond is mounted in a setting look for markings on the bottom or back.  A real diamond will be set in a good quality metal such as gold or silver.  If it is gold it will be stamped something like 10K, 14K or 18K.  Some other stamps are 585, 750, 900, 950, PT and Plat, if there are stamps on the bottom or back it could be real.  If it is stamped CZ it is Cubic Zirconia and not a real diamond.

If there are a lot of scratches, scuffs or knicks on the surface of the diamond it is probably a fake because diamonds are really hard and durable, however there can be imperfections inside the diamond that may look like cracks, this is because of how they are formed and could mean that it is real.

One site claimed that you can drop it in water, diamonds will sink and fakes will float, but this will only work with loose diamonds.

These are some of the easiest and best ways to tell if your diamond is fake or real so if your precious rocks passes these test then you most likely have a real diamond and just to be 100% sure you should take it to be appraised by a reputable professional.
