Strings
What type of strings to buy.
When playing an instrument like guitar, it is important to know what kind of strings to buy. Even though all strings have the same functionality, there are differences in between them. This can vary from the tension applied to the kind of material used to make them.
Roundwound Strings
These are the simplest ones of all strings, Round wound strings have a solid round core inside a round winding wire. Round wound strings are generally unwanted by most musicians because the squeaking sound that they produce. They are uncomfortable to the fingers too. Even though these strings have disadvantages, there are artist that use them on purpose to produce certain kind of sounds.
Flatwound Strings
These strings are more comfortable to the fingers, and produce less unwanted sound. They also have a round core, but their winding wire has a rounded square cross-section. They also tend to produce less wear and damages to the instrument than the round wound strings. However many musicians prefer the sound of round wound strings better. Flatwounds are often accused of producing a less brighter sound too.
Hexwound Strings
These type of strings have regular hexagonal cores, cover with a tight winding that fit the hexagonal shape. It is sited that Hexagonal Core improves tones. But they have some drawbacks, because of the hexagonal shape these strings are less comfortable to the fingers and cause more damages to the instrument than all the other types of strings.
Other factors like the diameter of the strings is also important. Each diameter produces a different kind of sound! Therefore is important to know the gauge of the strings when you go to the music store. If you don’t know the diameter by the time you get there then is good idea to talk to someone who work at the music store. Explain (him/her) what kind of music do you play and look for strings recommendations.
Never use nylon strings for an electric guitar, that wont work! Unless you have one of those types of electronic guitars form the 70s. Most nylon strings are made for acoustic guitars, even though now days many acoustic guitars also uses metal strings. Watch out! There are acoustic guitars that only use nylon strings. These types of acoustics are not strong enough to withstand the pulling force of metal strings and could result in bridge and body damages.
