Mina and Hwang’s weapon demonstrations.

I have always been fascinated with East Asian martial arts, particularly weaponed martial arts, though I tend to focus on the “arts” aspect. Hwang and Mina (from the Soul Edge/Calibur series) are two of my favorite characters who both specialize in their respective styles. Hwang uses a type of broadsword (called Blue Thunder) while Mina uses a polearm (Scarlet Thunder). Here are videos of them performing their weapon forms or patterns – a set of detailed choreographed patterns of movements either practiced solo or in pairs. In Japanese it is called a kata while in Chinese a taolu. In Korean there are three different terms used. They are hyeong, pumsae and teul. Actors were used to capture their movements and translate it to digital model – called motion capture – to make it more realistic.

For awhile I was a student in the School of Chung Moo Doe. I had to drop out because I could no longer afford the fee; but I actually miss the discipline and the physical demands. It was a tradional martial arts form with lots of bowing. I still do some of the movements in my apartment.
