Snoring: Problem and Solution
The severity of your snoring could be measured by the fact that. "if you or your spouse move out of the bedroom, the level of your snoring is considered to be moderate," but "if your neighbors move, then your snoring is heavy and might not be tolerated.
Snoring could break spousal relationships, since, either spouse could be hurt by it. Statistics show that snoring among men are more frequent than that of women. Seventy-one percent of men snore, while only fifty-one percent of women do. Clinical studies reveal that moderate snorers are those that snore every night, but only when they sleep on their backs.
What causes snoring is the tissue in the upper airway in the back of the throat that relaxes during sleep, according to Philip Smith, M.D. Director of the John Hopkins University Sleep Disorders Center, Baltimore, Maryland. The tissue vibrates when you breathe in, similar to a wind instrument.
Generally, snorers among men are mostly in the middle-age bracket, particularly among those that are overweight. Among women, statistics show snoring gets more frequent after menopause. One of the ways that you could stop snoring is to lose weight, according to the University of Toronto Sunnybrook Medical Center Sleep Laboratory. When a moderate snorer loses weight, the snoring becomes less audible and in some instances, disappears altogether. You could snore when you are even a little overweight. Twenty percent over your ideal weight could cause snoring. The following tips could be helpful:
l) Do not take any alcohol before bedtime. It could accelerate your snoring.
2) Do not take sedatives before bedtime, such as sleeping pills. While sleeping pills might make you sleep, it would keep your spouse awake.
3) Do not smoke. Statistics show that smokers tend to be snorers.
4) When you sleep, try to do so on your side. While heavy snorers could snore in any position, those that are classified in the moderate category, usually snore while sleeping on their backs.
5) Do not sleep on a large pillow. The larger the pillow, the more elevated the snore.
6) Elevate your bed. It could minimize your snoring.
7) Studies showed that allergies could cause snoring. Sneezing and snoring somehow go together.
8) For those on the receiving end, wear earplugs before going to bed, You could buy it in any pharmacy.
