Tips to Buy the Perfect Cigar Humidor
There is a wide variety of humidors available both in stores and online. By far, the best deals can be found on the internet, but you need to take several factors into account before you select the perfect fit for your stogie needs.
First, determine what your needs are and prioritize them. For example, if price is the main concern that will limit the size options or if looks are a concern, be sure WYSIWYG. Not every online store is created equal. Apart from that, follow these tips to help you on your way to humidor bliss.
- Determine the size you need. There are many schools of thought for humidor size. For example, I have a 300 count humidor that holds just about every cigar plus contains two drawers for cutters and lighters. Then I have a small humidor that holds my pride and joy cigar as I don’t want any other scents to linger on them. And there is one more small humidor that has the worst cigars I ever tasted. Instead of throwing them away, keep them for those uninvited or unwanted house guests then revel in delight as they pontificate as to how good the cigar tastes.
- Now that you know the size, what finish, color and design do you want? There are countless options from large tabletops to free-standing pieces of furniture to small executive models to glass topped beauties. To each their own. There’s no rules here. Pick what you like.
- Now search the web and be sure to stay away from Thompson Cigar as they hot glue their horrible logo onto every humidor. To make matters worse, it usually is put on crooked or off center and the glue shows. This is difficult as they tend to have the most varied selection. If you aren’t hung up on looks, it might be a good fit. I like Cigars International the best.
- Makes sure it comes with at least a basic humidifier and gauge. If you can afford it, it is certainly worth it to upgrade to a digital hydrometer with an alarm to alert you when you need more distilled water. Be wary of any cigar purchase that say something like “the box these cigars are sold in can be used as a humidor, just add a humidifier for…” This is always wrong. Even the top of the line cigars aren’t shipped in actual humidors though some may look the part.
