MTG: Top 20 Angels

MTG: Top 20 Angels

Taking a look at the best angels ever printed!

Angels have been around since the very beginning of MTG. They’re a very much part of the MTG world and angels have appeared in many sets. There have been over sixty printed so far, and more are on the way! However, what are the best angels? Let’s find out!

Honorable Mention: Akroma’s Memorial

Though technically not an angel, this card turns all your creatures into the one of the most insane cards ever! They all turn into Akroma, Angel Of Wrath! Or rather, they gain all her abilities. It’s a card that costs a lot but is so worth it. Why bother putting Akroma, Angel Of Wrath in a deck when you can pay the same amount of mana and have an army of them? Why indeed? Well, mostly cause Akroma, Angel Of Wrath is cool. Now onto real angels…

#18 Angel Of Despair

Ugh, I’d be in despair too if this were my rare in a booster pack. All joking aside, this isn’t a terrible card, just not the best of the angels on this list. It has a high cost and destroys a permanent. If it only destroyed a creature then it would be terrible. If it had flash as well then it would be a much better card, but as it stands it is merely a big flying creature that happens to do something else.

#19 Luminous Angel

This card is a little hefty in its mana cost, but it generates some nice flying chump blockers for you. This illustration kicks the crap out of the original from Mirrodin. Based solely on illustration, this one would be in the top ten, but because of its less than desirable casting cost it comes in near the bottom of our list.

#18 Seraph

Here’s an old and interesting angel. This one steals your opponent’s creatures! A weird trait for a white card, but one that nobody would complain about! Once again, the mana cost is a little high. If it was a 5/5 instead of a 4/4 it would be much better, however it isn’t bad the way it is. Anyhow, this card simply resurrects creatures to fight for you! It’s like the precursor to Adarkar Valkyrie (which we’ll talk about later).

#17 Empyrial Archangel

This is one of those cards that makes me question mythic rares. Is it really worthy of that status? I don’t think so at all. This is a cool card though, don’t get me wrong. It can prevent all damage dealt to you in one turn and your opponent’s can’t destroy it with a kill spell. That’s pretty cool. However, there are a lot better rares out there, why is this one mythic? Well, who cares I suppose. It’s still a cool card. It’s in Bant’s colors and has an awesome illustration.

#16 Serra Avenger

Here’s a unique card from Time Spiral. Everything from that block was about time, and this card is no exception. This one can’t be played right away. You have to wait. I suppose the thinking is that you can’t avenge something if nothing’s happened yet, right? Anyhow, this is just a strong play for only two mana. You play this card along with something else from your hand on the fourth turn and it’s just a good feeling. Great flavor text for this card too.

#15 Lightning Angel

Weird colors, right? This is an old card from Apocalypse (so old for some, fairly recent for others). This is the Timeshifted version. If you’re running these colors then this card is a great play. You get to have a 3/4 with flying, vigilance, and haste for only four mana. That’s a pretty sweet deal.

#14 Battlegrace Angel

Here is another Bant card on the list. How can you tell? If it has exalted, it’s a Bant card! Anyway, this one gives a creature that attacks alone lifelink. That’s pretty cool. If you aren’t using this in a Bant deck, you may just want to swing with this card for five damage and gain a quick five life. In a Bant deck, however, this card can make a big difference. Establishing that edge in life totals can really make a difference.

#13 Angel Of Salvation

This card you play to either save yourself or certain creatures you need. The convoke makes this card a lot more playable than it looks. Not only that, but it also makes sense in a flavor sort of way. It’s an angel that comes and saves you when you’re in trouble! It’s a cool idea and definetly a good angel, but not quite the best one. However, we are starting to get into the good ones, so get ready!

#12 Filigree Angel

If you play this card, you will make a startling come back! This card has the ability to restore your beyond where you even started! Use it in an Esper deck with those old artifact lands and you’ll certainly gain over twenty life when you play this. If you played it with all artifact lands then you would gain a minimum of twenty-seven life (counting this card)! That’s a whole lot of life! It’s a cool angel, but it really only fits in with artifacts.

#11 Reya Dawnbringer

Although this card sports the heftiest mana cost on this list, it’s totally worth it! You get one creature back from your graveyard on your upkeep. This card means that you can re-use all kinds of awesome creature cards. It is expensive, but the ability to resurrect its fallen comrades is quite formidable.

#10 Pristine Angel

This card is one of the most powerful defensive cards in MTG. You can use this and block anything that comes your way. You can use it to attack as well, but it won’t have protection from all colors and artifacts. Save your spells so that you’ll be able to untap this after you attack. It’s a great defensive card, though it can only ever defend against one creature, making it slightly less than perfect. However, it is hard to get through this card if you’ve only got one or two main attacking creatures.

#9 Adarkar Valkyrie

This card is like Seraph, but WAY better. This card can attack, and then still be able to use its ability. It can take any creature put into a graveyard and bring it into play under your control (as long as you do it by the end of the turn). It’s a great card and proof that Coldsnap was actually a pretty awesome set!

#8 Fallen Angel

Here’s one of the few black angels. It’s a really great card! People underestimate its use. You use it in an all out assault and sacrifice everything at the last minute to give this card a huge offensive boost. This card can end a game, and shouldn’t be underestimated!

#7 Blinding Angel

As long as you can hit your opponent with this card each turn, they won’t be able to hit you back! This card prevents them from having a combat phase. It’s an incredibly annoying card to go up against, but when this angel is working for you it’s a whole lot of fun.

#6 Stoic Angel

This card is a creature version of Smoke. It works especially well because it doesn’t tap when it attacks, making  it immune to its own ability. Not to mention, it’s a Bant card! It’s meant to combo with a bunch of exalted cards to make give you one huge creature to attack with. You’ll still be strong offensively, while your opponent tries to adapt to the situation.

#5 Akroma, Angel Of Fury

Red Akroma? Can’t argue with that! This card is extra cool because you can play it for only six mana! Of course, you would need to morph it first, but that’s no trouble at all! This card can destroy an opponent almost as well. Firebreathing and trample is quite powerful. That’s nothing to laugh at.

#4 Maelstrom Archangel

This card may be tricky to play, but once you play it the game is yours! You can play anything for free once you deal combat damage to a player with this card! This card can play every other card on this list, and that says a lot! It’s a mythic rare worthy of its title! In fact, the next three cards are all mythic rares too! Good to see they finally got it right!

#3 Jenara, Asura Of War

This card can be played early in the game and can build from there. It’s a becomes a giant angel, but it’s also in Bant colors! This means that it will get exalted boosts too if its in the right deck. It’s good this card is legendary, because if it weren’t it might be a little out of control! It’s an amazing angel and is one of the easiest to play on this entire list.

#2 Akroma, Angel Of Wrath

Recently upgraded to mythic rare in the Divine Vs. Demonic duel deck set, this card is awesome. It’s one of the most recognizable cards in MTG for a reason! It’s very powerful and once it’s in play it’s very hard to stop. It has protection from red and black, meaning that most kill spells won’t be able to touch it. Not only that, but it has five offensive abilities! It’s an insane card and the new illustration doesn’t do it justice. I put both here. Which do you think looks more full of wrath?

#1 Platinum Angel

Although it isn’t out yet, this card will appear in MTG 2010 as a mythic rare. A very good call. This card first came out in Mirrodin and was reprinted in Tenth Edition. However, dsepite still being relatively new, this card is already an iconic card (just like Akroma, Angel Of Wrath). Most people aren’t fans of cards that make you instantly win. However, people are fans of cards that prevent you from losing. It seems like the same thing, but it isn’t. This card’s ability was one that sparked some angry blogging, but in the end it’s become a fan favorite! It doesn’t garauntee a win or anything, but if you play with this card you become quite a challenge to defeat. It’s an awesome angel and can go in any deck. This is the best angel ever printed!

Thanks for reading!

:) thanks

Red Akroma does have trample. I still don’t think it’s better than the original because the original has pro black, and alot of the spells that can take this out by themselves are black (terror, banishing etc). I guess the red one has pro white which somewhat balances the loss of pro black as white has path to exhile, swords, etc.

I don’t think platinum should be number one though as it doesn’t win you games by itself… it just prevents you from losing (and is succeptible to alot more removal than your standard angels ’cause it dies to artifact hate). I think with magic2010 coming out the new Baneslayer angel should be at the top of your list.

Serra obviously deserves an honorable mention as well.

Baneslayer Angel should top the list

i don’t think so, but i should be around number two or three. however, i did make this list before that card existed

No exalted angel? Please tell me you just forgot.

Seriously Platinum angel for 1? Baneslayer is a way better card and so is Pristine Angel and so is Akroma, Angel of Wrath. Platinum is only good if it is also indestructible with shroud. I can terror it, I can Path to exile it, I can double lightning bolt it, I can terminate it. Its way to much of a target to be on the list anywhere near the bottom.

Pristine Angel deserves spot 5 plus, on its own its a nearly unbeatable blocker, give it the ability to double block and its amazing, give it vigilance and it will win you the game.

Baneslayer is unbelievable give it Akroma\’s memorial and its almost invincible.

Drakdrium13, posted this comment on Aug 27th, 2009

dangthing, your post makes very little sense. Pristine Angel may be worth more, i consent to that. however, your other comments are a little silly. this list was created before Baneslayer Angel was printed, so it obviously is not on this list.

It is also silly to say how easily Platinum Angel can be destroyed by terminate, path to exhile, or etc, as those spells can also just as easily take out Baneslayer Angel (though Akroma is harder to hit because of its pro red and black). Also, you can’t use Terror on Platinum Angel because it is an artifact creature. Furthermore, saying that Baneslayer with Akroma’s Memorial is invincible is stupid. Any card on this list with Akroma’s Memorial is almost invincible.

In conclusion, you’re right about Pristine Angel, but Platinum Angel stays number one. And since Baneslayer wasn’t a card when this list was created, I’d say it falls right behind Akroma (white). I appreciate your comments, but disagree nearly completely

When I said terror I actually meant Doom Blade, doom blade is a new version of terror that can kill Artifact creatures as well, sorry for that mistake. Also I think I was unclear about why Platinum Angel is not a good card, in my opinion.

Yes your right you can use path, terror, etc on Baneslayer. However most angel cards, including Baneslayer are better than Platinum angel for other reasons.

Platinum Angel is only a 4/4 creature, yet it has a mana cost of (7). The only abilities it has is, you can’t lose, and Flying. Most Angel Card that cost (7) mana or even less have a larger power/toughness as well as a more abilities which are better than Platinum Angels.

Platinum Angel can be very good. Its ability “you can’t lose, your opponents can’t win.” Is very attractive, however unless your deck is built around protecting Platinum Angel this ability is pointless. It in no way makes the creature a better fighter, defensive or offensive.

Unlike almost every other Angel, Platinum Angel will become almost every other players #1 target the moment it hits the field, because they will assume that you are going to make it as invincible as possible. Even though kills and removal spells can kill most angels, most players will not kill your angels the moment the hit the field because they aren’t actually ultra dangers yet.

Platinum loses its goodness not because it has a bad ability, but because it will be killed the moment it hits the field making it a waste of (7) mana and probably a turn as well. Also platinum angel can be killed by Destroy Artifact spells as well, while other angels cannot.

Also as for saying that Baneslayers not on the list because the list was made before its time…you can’t seriously tell me that you can’t update the list, your obviously still paying attention to it.

Drakdrium13, posted this comment on Aug 30th, 2009

true, i could update this list, and probably will, but not for a while since zendikar is only about a month or two away and i’m fairly lazy when it comes to updates. howerver, i see your point and agree that platinum angel is quite the big target and offers hardly any combative edge. I feel that Baneslayer (or Akroma) is the best angel in terms of combat and Platinum Angel is the best in terms of abilities (despite having some downsides). Also, Platinum Angel is a cool card to stick in any deck since it’s colorless. A favorite in casual MTG

Kind of dissapointed, fair enough baneslayer wasn’t printed when you wrote this, but platinum as #1?
cmonnn!
Once you have him out on the field your opponent controls the game, because you have a sense of security, and then your taking the damage thinking itll be fine, then he pops out a wrath of god, day of judgement, path to exile.. etc.
His definitely one of the coolest angels, but not the best.
I also think you rated Serra angel too lowly, sure shes only a 3/3, BUT she gives you soooo much tempo, and its such a good beatstick.
And what happend to Exalted angel? She is like.. top 5, easy.. one of the most playable angels.

Drakdrium13, posted this comment on Nov 19th, 2009

exalted angel is definetly mysteriously absent. to be honest, i forgot about her when i made this list! i don’t quite agree on serra angel, but it is still a good card. I feel that platinum angel is the best though because you could give the same argument about someone using path to exile or wrath of god on any of the other angels here. it’s not like someone won’t try to do the same thing to Akroma. however, while i’m taking the time to comment, i will give a quick rank of where baneslayer falls. it’s at about 2 or 3. i hesitate to put it below Akroma, despite it being much more playable. it doesn’t have as many sweet abilities, you know? the lifelink is the best part in my opinion.
